Malaysia —The ICTSI squad from the Philippines copped the Division II and team crowns at the conclusion of the 30th Malaysia Ladies Amateur Open in Kuala Lumpur on late Thursday.

Sofia Chabon (71-225), though only 12 years old, showed veteran smarts as she romped away in Division II over Malasian Nur Shahzan (75-236).

In the team competition, the Philippine contingent, made up of Cyna Rodriguez, Princess Superal, and Pauline del Rosario, combined for 279 over three days to defeat Malaysia’s 281.

“It was a good week here at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club,” said ICTSI and women’s national coach Bong Lopez.

Chabon, despite her youth, is slowly developing into a star.  She carded a 79 in the first round then improved to a 75, followed by a 71 in the finale.

“I’m very happy,” was Chabon’s limited reply with a big smile.

Those two victories logged by our country’s bets overshadowed local star Kelly Tan’s win in Division I.  Tan (71-208) escaped by a hairline over Rodriguez and Superal.

Rodriguez made a three-under-par 68 while Superal had an even 71 for identical 209, one stroke down in the premiere first division. Del Rosario had a 78 for 221, tied for 11th. - CLP, GMA News
