Instagram allays deleted account fears, admits technical issues

Popular photo-sharing service Instagram on Saturday (Manila time) allayed fears it was deleting accounts, saying it had suffered from a technical glitch.

 

In a post on its Twitter account, Instagram also apologized for the inconvenience where many users reported not being able to access their accounts.

 

"Sorry for the hiccup! Thanks for your reports regarding yesterday's technical issues. We're back on track," it said in the post dated 12:52 a.m. Saturday, Manila time.

 

A report on tech site Mashable said the glitch Thursday night had "prompted rumors that Instagram was randomly deleting accounts."

 

It said the rumors prompted the creation of the hashtag #Dontdeletemyaccount on Instagram, "where more than 500,000 photos used the tag," and on Twitter.

 

Mashable also cited speculation by some users who thought Instagram, which social juggernaut Facebook had acquired, was freeing up server space.

 

"Adding fuel to the rumors, someone started an account called DontdeletemyIG that now has 68,000 followers," it said.  — ELR, GMA News
