Justice Steve Anthony Coroza, the first Filipino-Canadian to hold the highest position at the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in Canada, actively volunteers for causes that benefit youths, especially young immigrants. An article on the Asian Journal news site on May 25 noted that Coroza actively contributes to projects promoting education and race relations.

"One of his commitments is to help the youth and new young immigrants. This is why he volunteers at the Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN) to educate the youth about Canada’s justice system," Asian Journal said.

"Justice Coroza finds great fulfillment in being able to give back to the community, by helping mold and mentor the next generation," the article said.
Coroza cited parents, grandparents and extended relatives as the first teachers of young people and must thus set "high expectations from them and push them towards academic excellence,” the Asian Journal said.

News of Coroza’s appointment as a judge of the Ontario Superior Court was recently announced by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Before his appointment, Coroza was a judge of the Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines. He is set to formally assume his new position on July 8.

Coroza started as a staff duty counsel for Ontario Legal Aid in Toronto, where he practiced criminal law until 1998.

He then served as a senior counsel with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada until 2009, appearing at all levels of court in Ontario and supervising more than 100 federal Crown agents throughout southern Ontario. - Gian C. Geronimo, VVP, GMA News
