Back-to-school gadgets: A Pop Talk Review

May 31, 2013 2:59pm

Gone are the days when students would rely solely on books and libraries to study. Today, gadgets are also used to research, take down notes, keep schedules, and stay connected. As summer vacation draws to a close, “Pop Talk” reviews three back-to-school gadgets. GadgetPilipinas founder Gian Viterbo, techie student Ervin Bermejo, and actress Janine Gutierrez join host Tonipet Gaba to decide which among these fun and functional gadgets should be added to a students’ back-to-school shopping list.

Ultimate Watch
Price: P2,499

The Ultimate Watch functions as a phone that can take and receive calls, send messages, capture photos, record videos, and play music.

The features may not be as powerful as those found in smartphones, but the reviewers agreed that the Ultimate Watch is perfect for students. Gadget expert and technology blogger Gian Viterbo likened the Ultimate Watch to a Swiss knife. Janine Gutierrez agreed: “Bagay siya sa mga bata. Useful siya kasi ‘di mo makakalimutan, ‘di mo mawawala and I think ma-eenjoy nila yung mga features nito, mga games, camera.”

Final verdict: 9 pop points

Lenovo S800
Price: P4,000

Lenovo S800 prides itself as the first mobile phone with a transparent screen in the Philippines. It has a 2 megapixel camera, an MP3 player, a voice memo recorder, and an organizer.

Janine immediately liked Lenovo S800’s design. “Affordable saka talagang may wow factor. Kasi I’ve never seen anything like it. Ito yung parang makikita mo lang sa mga James Bond [movies].”

However, the reviewers thought that the phone’s performance did not live up to its sleek design. For one thing, the screen display is not too visible under the sunlight. Gian commented: “Mahirap siyang gamitin ‘pag maliwanag. ‘Pag naman madilim dun mo lang siya mamaximize.”

Final verdict: 4 pop points

Sony Xperia Tablet Z
Price: P29,000 to P35,000

For students who want to make sure their gadget remains waterproof during the rainy season, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is one option. This gadget functions even if it's submerged in up to one meter of water. Some of its other features include a 10.1 inch screen display, 8.1 megapixel camera at the back and 2.2 megapixel camera at the front.

“Madami ka pwede i-download na mga games at kung marami kang research sa school, ang daming apps na pwedeng ma-download,” said Gian. Ervin affirmed that it will be useful for students like him: “May SD card slot siya na gustong-gusto ko kasi bilang student po marami po kaming ilalagay na applications when it comes sa paggawa ko ng assignments and projects. Very useful po sa’kin yun.”

However, some of the reviewers thought that the tablet might be too expensive for students.

Final verdict: 8 pop points
