Filipinos received kudos from representatives of foreign governments via cyberspace as they marked their 115th Independence Day on Wednesday.

The ambassadors of the United States and Australia on Wednesday took to cyberspace to relay their congratulations to Filipinos, on the occasion of the Philippines' 115th Independence Day.

US Ambassador Harry Thomas Jr. tweeted before dawn Wednesday a greeting in Filipino to greet the Filipino people on the occasion, which is a regular holiday.

Even former US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Ann Kenney, who is now based in Bangkok, tweeted her greetings.

For his part, Australian Ambassador Bill Tweddell posted a lengthy congratulatory message to the Filipino people on YouTube.

The video, which was also embedded on the website of Australia's embassy in the Philippines, lasted four-and-a-half minutes.

In his message, Tweddell noted Australia's Filipino community is over 200,000 strong, with Filipino doctors, nurses, accountants and engineers "contributing strongly in many other walks of life."

He hailed the working professionals in the Philippines and overseas as "the Philippines' modern heroes."

Also, Tweddell congratulated the Philippines on the reforms under the Aquino administration, citing balanced budgets, judicial reform, basic education and reproductive health rights.

Tweddell likewise cited the peace negotiations that led to the signing last year of a framework peace agreement with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

He cited as well the close ties between the Philippines and Australia for nearly 70 years.

"Australia - its government and people - look forward to continuing our close relations in the years ahead. Mabuhay!" he said. — TJD, GMA News
