(Updated 2 p.m.) After spending Saturday night in a tent, Filipino boxing champ and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao started his Sunday with a Bible session and interacting with some survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in Eastern Samar.

Pacquiao spent the night at the compound of the Eastern Samar State University in Guiuan, the town where Yolanda made the first of six landfalls last Nov. 8, radio dzBB's Rodil Vega reported.

On Sunday morning, the boxing icon attended a Bible session where he told the participants he is confident they will recover from this disaster.

He also told them he went to the Visayas all the way from Manila so he could help them.

Later,  a report on "Balitanghali" said Pacquiao gave typhoon victims money while touring Eastern Samar, adding that the transport of the relief items his team prepared had been delayed.

While families who lined up were given P1,000 each, Pacquiao handed out an undisclosed amount of cash to each family living in makeshift shelters he passedby during his tour.

He is scheduled to tour Marabot and Basey before heading to Leyte to visit Yolanda-affected families there, before spending the night in Tacloban City with other survivors.

One week ago, Pacquiao gave Yolanda-affected residents in the Visayas a major morale booster with his win over Brandon Rios in Macau.

Following his win, he said he plans to visit many of the Yolanda-affected families in the Visayas. — with Rei Takumi /LBG, GMA News
