Dato proclaimed Camarines congressman

May 18, 2007 2:39pm

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's son has been proclaimed congressman of the first district of Camarines Sur, besting a third-term mayor from the Genuine Opposition (GO).

Television reports said Friday afternoon that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) recognized the electoral victory of Diosdado "Dato" Arroyo.

GO had fielded "homegrown" bet Mayor Sabas Mabulo of San Fernando town.

Adel Tamano, GO spokesman, earlier said Mabulo would likely win the congressional race since Dato is allegedly not a true son of Camarines Sur.

He claimed that Dato merely took up his residency in the the province so he could meet the one-year residency requirement.

Diosdado's brother, Juan Miguel, is currently seeking reelection in the second district of Pampanga, President Arroyo's home province. - GMANews.TV
