UST, UP enter Nike women's basketball semis

Games Thursday Ninoy Aquino Stadium 2 p.m. - FEU vs Adamson 3:30 p.m. - Mapua vs Letran The UAAP women's champion University of Santo Tomas (UST) demolished the College of St. Benilde (CSB), 90-70, while the University of the Philippines (UP) overcame the University of the East (UE), 65-57, to enter the semifinals of the 2007 Nike Summer League basketball tournament at the Far Eastern University Gym in Manila. Handled by veteran mentor Elizabeth "Peque" Tan, the UST Tigresses leaned on the troika of Marichu Bacaro, Dominique Leonardo, and Remia Buenacosa in demolishing the CSB Lady Blazers, according to a league on Wednesday. Bacaro topscored with 28 points for the Tigresses. Leonardo had 16 and Buenacosa added 14 for the España-based squad, which will face UAAP arch-rival Far Eastern University (FEU) in the crossover semifinals on June 2. The UP Lady Maroons, led by coach Eric Castro, meanwhile, relied on File Cainglet to frustrate the UE Amazons. Cainglet scored 16 points to lead the Lady Maroons to triumph over the Amazons. Anna Asistio and Jedil Robelo contributed 11 and 10 points respectively for the Lady Maroons, who remained the only unbeaten team in the tournament with nine wins, including eight straight wins in the elimination round. The Lady Maroons will battle College and the Philippine College of Criminology (PCCr) in the cross-over semifinals. The PCCr is the University Sports Asssociation (CUSA) champion. In the other games, FEU nipped Adamson University, 60-48, and PCCr downed Philippine Maritime Institute (PMI), 73-61, to secure the other two semifinals spots. The FEU Lady Tamaraws of coach Michael Oliver got a combined 45 points from Chovi Borja, Aurora Adriano, Bernadette Mercado, and Kat Reyes to nip the Adamson Lady Falcons. Borja topscored with 13 points, Adriano and Mercado made 11 points each, and Reyes made 10 points, with 14 rebounds, for the Lady Tamaraws. The PCCr Lady Enforcers, mentored by Bang Tumapat, drew superb performances from Stineli Casakit and two other players in downing their CUSA rivals, the PMI Lady Admirals, to join the three UAAP teams in the next round. - GMANews.TV
