Newcomer Las Piñas College came away with a stunning 70-68 stopping of the defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals in the sixth Universities and Colleges Athletic Association (UCAA) men’s basketball tournament, the league said Sunday.

The Blue Lions leaned on the heroics of one of their two Nigerian point guards to score their fifth win in nine matches.

Nigerian standout Carlos Iroung went for a lay-up with six ticks to go, shattering a 68-all deadlock and sending the Blue Lions to their third consecutive victory and a share of fourth position with the Philippine School of Business Administration Jaguars.

The Generals' third straight loss shook the standings, with the Asian College of Science and Technology Lightnings climbing to second position after they outplayed Universal College of Nursing, 88-78.

The solo-leading St. Francis of Assisi College Doves (8-1) earlier downed the La Salle-Dasmariñas Patriots, 78-62, to extend their winning run to six.

Ben Bikonte, the Blue Lions' other Nigerian standout, shone with 15 points, while Arjay Terez and Sereno Cunial provided 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Chris Bularon and Nikko Pupos fired 12 points apiece for the Lightnings, who improved at No. 2 with their 7-2 win-loss slate.

Gester Ebuen chipped in a game-high 20 points for the Generals, who fell third with their 6-3 card.

The Generals had a chance to win after Iroung's basket. However, they lost a lot of time after John Valderama bungled a three-point attempt.

The Blue Lions will have a chance to catch up with the Generals at third if they hurdle the Doves at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Olivarez College Sports Complex.

The Jaguars will also have a good opportunity of challenging the Generals' ambitions this year if they beat the La Salle-Dasmariñas Patriots at 1 p.m. - GMANews.TV
