Floods swamp north Metro Manila, classes not suspended
Typhoon "Goring" may be out of Philippine territory, but heavy rains and high tide threatened to submerge several parts of northern Metro Manila in floods Wednesday morning. Radio dzBB reported that residents in Malabon City have placed sandbags near their houses as floodwaters reached gutter level as of 7 a.m. Many residents also complained that the local government and school authorities had made no announcement on whether classes in the area would be suspended for the day. The dzBB report said gutter-deep floods have already affected M.H. del Pilar and Pascual Streets in Malabon City, rendering the streets passable only to tricycles. On the other hand, the National Disaster Coordinating Council warned residents near 13 rivers in Western Visayas late Tuesday to prepare for possible floods caused by typhoon "Goring." The NDCC ordered all disaster coordinating councils (DCCs) to undertake "all precautionary and appropriate measures" in their respective turfs. Office of the Civil Defense acting director Anthony Golez Jr. said waterways likely to be affected include all rivers and streams and tributaries in Panay Island in Western Visayas. These include the Ibajay River and Aklan River in Aklan; Jalano River, Jagdong River, Jalaur River, Lamunan River, and Jaro Agaman River in Iloilo; Mambusao River and Panay Malinao River in Capiz; and Sibalom River, Caraganan River, Palawan River, and Dalanas River in Antique. - GMANews.TV
