Australia, UK caution nationals in Manila

November 30, 2007 1:02am

The Australian government cautioned its nationals in the Philippines not to let their guard down during the weekend.

In a travel advisory issued on Thursday, Australians were warned that protest actions could occur in Metro Manila in the coming days, especially this weekend.

"Australians are advised to avoid the immediate area. Further demonstrations could occur over the weekend (1-2 December 2007)," the advisory says.

The Australian Embassy in Manila also advised its nationals to avoid "any large gatherings, demonstrations, protests, rallies or other public events as they may turn violent."

"You should monitor the media for information about any protests and follow the advice of authorities," it added.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom advised its nationals to exercise caution and take sensible precautions, and avoid large crowds and gatherings.

"You should exercise caution and take sensible precautions for your personal safety and avoid any large crowds, political gatherings and demonstrations. You should also keep yourself informed of developments and follow the advice of local authorities," it said in an updated advisory on its website. - GMANews.TV
