Arroyo tells PNP, AFP: crush all destab efforts

February 22, 2006 11:17am
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Wednesday appealed to the police and the military to foil all efforts to destabilize the government and to remain loyal to their commitment to defend the Constitution.

Mrs. Arroyo delivered the appeal as she kicked-off the four-day commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the 1986 People Power and laid a wreath at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Fort Bonifacio.

"I call upon our soldiers not to cede a single town to those who dream of breaking up the country, and I call upon the police not to cede a single street corner to those who plan to break into our homes," Arroyo said.

The President's statement came in the midst of renewed destabilization threats against the Arroyo administration.

Mrs. Arroyo extolled police and soldiers for the vital role they played in the first People Power uprising and reminded them they could again become heroes without betraying the chain of command.

"The Filipino soldier has played a great role in peace as in war. The Filipino soldier plays as great a role in the mudslides of St. Bernard as in the jungles of Pagkaoayan and the barricades of EDSA. And like the Filipino soldier, we don't need a war to become heroes. We don't have to wait for another EDSA," the President said.

"In fact we should not wait for another EDSA to establish our heroic credentials. What we need to do is to remember our duties as soldiers are disciplined to remember their duties," she said.

The President said the government could now provide more benefits to the Armed Forces and the National Police as she noted improving fiscal situation brought about by additional revenues generated by the expanded value added tax law.

"Higher value-added tax collection should result in value-added protection of those who pay them. Thus, we will put more cops on the streets, more guns in armories, more radios in their hands and more vehicles for patrolling. Defense will also be entitled to tax dividends," she said.

For the government to deliver on its promise, however, the President said: "We must pay taxes so crime does not pay."-GMANEWS.TV
