Authorities on Tuesday arrested a man said to be an investigator of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) who was allegedly carrying a firearm during demonstrations commemorating the 21st anniversary of the Mendiola massacre.

Superintendent Eleazar Mata, chief of the Manila Police District -General Assignment Section (GAS), identified the man as Policronio Nalangan Jr, 45, allegedly a special investigator of the CHR, and a resident of 307 Unit B 105 Soldier Village Sta Lucia, Pasig City.

Police Officer 2 Reginald Delos Reyes of the MPD-GAS, said Nalangan was nabbed at 1:10 p.m. in front of the KFC restaurant at the corner of Recto Avenue and San Sebastian Street in Sta Cruz, Manila .

The suspect was allegedly seen walking near Mendiola, while farmers and militants were holding their rallies in the area.

Policemen reportedly spotted Nalangan with an object bulging from his waist. Authorities then searched him, and found that Nalangan was in possession of a .9-millimeter handgun.

Nalangan denied that he was in the area to participate in the demonstrations. He told investigators that he was there to buy something for his daughter, a student at the University of the East in Manila.

Mata said Nalangan presented relevant documents for the 9-mm pistol. But authorities still slapped him with a charge of violating section 5 of Batas Pambansa 880 or the Public Assembly Act of 1985. - GMANews.TV
