President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Thursday said the promotion of Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales as cardinal brings joy and pride to the Filipino Catholic community.

Arroyo, in a speech before the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship, said: “Cardinal Rosales deserves this honor for the leadership he has shown in spreading and upholding the faith and in guiding our people along the path of moral spiritual enlightenment."

She said the ordainment of Rosales by Pope Benedict XVI came at an auspicious time when the country began celebrating the 20 th anniversary of the 1986 People Power Revolution, which was spearheaded by the late Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin.

“Twenty years ago and today, we celebrate the guiding role of the Church in defending what is good and right for the people. Our solidarity with Cardinal Rosales will be unsullied in the fight against poverty and in building a God-centered society," she said.

Rosales, 73, is known for his "Pondong Pinoy (Filipino fund)," a fund-raising project that has been feeding thousands of poor Filipinos nationwide.

Outgoing Papal Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Antonio Franco earlier announced that the Pope had appointed Rosales Cardinal at exactly 7 P.M. Wednesday.

Rosales was the sixth Filipino to become a cardinal. The others were Rufino Santos, Julio Rosales, Jaime Sin, Ricardo Vidal and Jose Sanchez.

The formal investiture, which involved the conferment of the red hat and the ring of a cardinal, will take place in March.-GMANews.TV
