Lozada continues 'truth caravan' in UP Los Baños visit

March 19, 2008 1:04pm
MANILA, Philippines - Fresh from his much talked-about visit in Cebu province, ZTE deal witness Rodolfo Noel Lozada Jr on Tuesday flew to Laguna to attend yet another "truth forum" at the University of the Philippines in Los Baños.

Lozada attended the truth forum "In Search for Truth and Justice" where he delivered his usual speech about his knowledge on the canceled $329.48-million national broadband network deal and his public appeal to join calls for the government to come out with the truth on alleged irregularities in the deal.

The two-hour forum started at 3 p.m., and was immediately followed by a candle-lighting activity on the Oblation grounds where Lozada, along with student organizers lit candles and formed them to read "Truth."

Lozada left the school ground at around 7 p.m. Fuentes said Lozada's camp would not tell them where Lozada will be headed next due to security reasons.

Leo LX Fuentes, president of the UPLB University Student Council and one of the organizers of the forum, said the forum pushed through despite "attempts to stop them."

Chancellor Luis Velasco, however, denied there were efforts to prevent organizers from holding the forum, although he admitted having informed the organizers of a standing Board of Regents order that disallows student organizations from holding non-academic activities beyond March 3.

"Hindi naman sila humihingi ng permit so how can they say na hindi ko sila pinapayagan? The letter was just meant to inform me about the event. I cannot act on it since there was no request," Velasco said in a separate interview with GMANews.TV.

"I just reminded them that they would be violating something and that it should not be taken lightly... At this period in the school year, students should already be focusing on academics and avoid any distraction," Velasco said.

Organizers, however, justified the activity citing scheduling concerns. They noted that Lozada would be taking a break from his "truth caravan" to observe the Holy Week. - Mark Merueñas, GMANews.TV
