May 11, 2008 7:22pm
BAGUIO CITY - Carlo J. Caparas finally earned the respect of Filipino teachers.

Caparas, known as the "Komiks King" to fans and "Massacre Director" to detractors, was awarded the Sagisag Balagtas Award by the Pambansang Samahan ng Mga Tagamasid at Tagataguyod ng Filipino (Pasataf) during its 52nd anniversary celebration at Teacher's Camp.

The award is handed to "individuals who contributed in enriching the national language."

The Sagisag Balagtas Award was handed by Pasataf President Alberto Macob to Caparas, who was accompanied by wife Donna Villa and children at the Benitez Hall of Teacher's Camp.

"Hindi dapat mangyari na ang ating wika ay tulad ng isang gamit na kapag ayaw ay itatapon at gagawing basahan (Filipino should not be treated like something that you can dispose of when no longer needed)," said Caparas in his acceptance speech.

Unknown to many, Caparas launched the Gantimpalang Carlo J. Caparas sa Sining ng Pagkukuwento, which is being coordinated by the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino. - GMANews.TV
