Remains of Ka Bel arrive at Batasan complex
MANILA, Philippines - Amid tight security, the remains of the late Anakpawis Rep. Crispin Beltran arrived at the Batasan Pambansa complex in Quezon City at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Radio dzBB's Mao dela Cruz reported that security was tight at the House of Representatives, amid reports that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo may go there to pay her "last respects" to Beltran.
The coffin bearing the lawmaker's remains were brought down from a 10-wheeler truck at the funeral procession and brought inside the building's lobby.
However, less than 200 militants wearing red shirts and clenching their fists, who accompanied Beltran's remains in a funeral procession from Manila, were allowed to enter the compound.
Media vehicles were also not allowed to enter the main gate, and told to pass through at the back.
Inside, lawmakers wore black armbands to pay their last respects to Beltran at the scheduled necrological rites.
Militant lawmakers Satur Ocampo, Teodoro CasiƱo, Liza Maza and Luzviminda Ilagan were among those who led the funeral march and helped carry Beltran's coffin.
Rep. Theresia Hontiveros-Baraquel (Akbayan), who had a falling out of sorts with Beltran, attended the march, saying she had set aside her differences with him.
Former House Minority Leader Francis Escudero, now a senator, also attended the rites. - GMANews.TV
