We may see Vicki Belo as a successful, empowered woman and an inspiring dermatologist to many, but her life has not always been a bed of roses.
Her early life struggles are what led her to build her own beauty empire in the country.
At a young age, she would receive harsh comments about being fat and pimply. Pained by the insults, she felt her being "undesirable" was the reason she was put up for adoption, and that her real parents gave her away because she didn't look beautiful.
Speaking to GMANetwork.com, Vicki recounted, "I think it started when I was young. I was very fat and I was adopted.
"My classmates would ask me, 'why did your parents give you away?' and my other friends would say, 'of course, you're ugly and you're fat.'
"So what I got early in my life, parang na-conclude ko na 'pag mataba ka at hindi ka maganda, pinamimigay ka lang.
"And then when I was in my teenage years, starting 11 years old, ang dami kong tigyawat.
"Again, I felt ugly, I felt dirty, I felt oily, and then 'pag pumupunta ko sa party, parang feeling ko lagi silang nakatingin sa tigyawat ko.
"Parang hindi nila ako nakikita, parang nadi-distract sila kasi ang dami kong pimples."
These insecurities fueled her drive to become a dermatologist. She wanted to give hope to those who shared the same insecurities she had when she was a girl.
"I was only five years old when I wanted to make people beautiful para they will be loved.
"That was my equal, 'di ba, if you're beautiful, you're loved."
True enough, Vicki has never been happier and more confident when she worked on herself and fixed her problems through cosmetic surgery.
The founder and medical director of Belo Medical Group said, "In my own experience, no'ng naayos ko na 'yung mga problema ko, like being fat, maraming taghiyawat, naging happier ako.
"I am more self-confident and more successful kasi 'di na nagiging obstacle ang aking pagka-self-conscious sa mga problema ko.
"So the biggest reward for me in putting up Belo Medical Group is the way we change life by just making people more beautiful and more self-confident.
"Parang if it's something that moves you, you're an inspiration for the working union."
Ever since, Vicki has been vocal about her being adopted.
Born to Victoria Cancio, Vicki was adopted by her aunt, Florencia Gonzalez and her husband Enrique Belo.
