Manang Sally, as the actress fondly calls her, was a pediatric infectious diseases specialist at the Philippine General Hospital and Research Institute for Tropical Medicine. She was also the current national president of the Philippine Pediatric Society, Inc. when the COVID-19 pandemic spread in the country.

It was because of her unwavering duty to battle the dreaded disease that she unfortunately lost her life on March 26, 2020. While Dr. Gatchalian is gone, she will never be forgotten, especially by Ruby.

The actress-comedienne took her commemoration of her sister to social media in time of the latter's first death anniversary.

Ruby wrote, “It has been a year to date that our dear Manang Sally aka Dr Sally R Gatchalian, left us for a better place. She is a vaccine advocate! She fought really hard for the children's welfare and well-being. She is one of the first 10 Doctors who passed away due to Covid.

“This Pandemic has taught us a lot. Let us all hang on and keep the faith as manang sal would say "an ounce of prevention is much more than a pound of cure." Keep safe, love your family, smile with your friends... we don't know til when. As she is a Super K Drama Fan/Addict to all we say SARANGHAE. Manang Sally, saranghaeyo, bogoshipo neomu neomu.”
