Here's a simple guide for girls who love fashion and keeping up with trends and not hurt your savings.

For 20-something girls who love fashion and keeping up with trends, sometimes money can become an issue. With sales popping left and right and the booming industry of fast fashion, it's admittedly a bit difficult to figure out where to put your money on.

What you need to remember is this: as you navigate your way clothes rack after clothes rack, it's important to prioritize buying clothes that you actually need and not because you simply like it.

Here's a tried and tested formula to bring light to your savings:

Cost per wear = Cost of item /total number of wears

This formula will help you feel less guilty about purchasing pieces that are a bit hefty on the price tag and it helps you to consider an item first to deter yourself from hoarding.

To justify the point, here are a few examples to clarify:

If you're planning to buy two pairs of shoes, say, a cute pair of flats that retails for Php 3,000 that you'll wear for 30 days, and a pair of pumps worth Php 1000 that you'll wear only once a month. It would be more cost efficient to buy the flats because it would only cost you Php 100 per day compared to the latter.

Consider the longevity

If you know your clothes, it's important to always consider the fabric of an item. Natural fibers such as cotton, linen, silk, wool, and cashmere tend to last longer and are more comfortable than synthetic ones like polyester and rayon. So, if you're looking at a blazer that's about Php 2,500 and you'll be wearing it four times a month, that would cost you Php 52 per wear.

This is tricky. But it all boils down depending on your needs. As mentioned earlier, buy only the essentials. If you love to wear heels while commuting the Metro, then opt for the retail ones. It doesn't break the heart once it's worn out. But, if you already have a wide option of shoes in your closet then maybe it's time to invest in a good pair and just have them repaired later on.

This mindset can help you consider the things you own and also the things you're about to buy. It's both a discipline and a habit that I've cultivated in my life and maybe you can too.
