Have you ever thought about what your clothes are made of? Who makes them? Or even, what happens once you throw them away?
The truth about the billion-dollar fashion industry is actually pretty ugly.
In a study by the Ellen McArthur Foundation, they found that one garbage truck of textile is wasted every second.
That's about 92 million tons of solid waste dumped in landfills every year.
In reality, the fashion industry is the second biggest consumer of water and generates greenhouse gas emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.
It is alarming, to say the least, that the beautiful clothes we wear oftentimes come with a price.
So what can we do about it?
First, be educated with what you're buying and know your fabrics. By going for natural and organic fibres, your clothes will last longer and you get a bang for your buck.
Secondly, do your research with regard to brands and know the steps they're taking with regard to ethical practices and helping the environment.
And that's what a few Kapuso celebrities and personalities did.
In a private event held yesterday at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, a few Kapuso stars have graced the H&M Conscious Exclusive Event to learn more about how fashion affects the environment and what fast fashion industries are doing to address the problem.
Asia's pop sweetheart and Studio 7 host Julie Ann San Jose attended the said event while donning a beautiful pink chiffon jumpsuit made of roughly 57% recycled material.
Kapuso actor and entrepreneur Rocco Nacino was also present in the event. He even lauded the Philippine pineapple industry for providing a better alternative to synthetic fibers.
He shares, “Definitely saw the importance of awareness and am proud of how the Philippines is playing a huge role through our own Pineapple resources.
“Hence, Piñatex, is finally here to help us become responsible consumers.”
Model and Host Joey Mead King gracefully attended and shared how she's making a conscious effort to live sustainably every day.
She states, “I didn't know that orange & even algae can be made into such beautiful fashionable quality pieces.”
“I am mindful already of what I want to eat and live. What more with what I wear, sustainable fashion with majorly less impact on Mother Earth.”
Fashion editor Thuy Trang of Elle Vietnam was also present.
CHEATS lead singer and mom Saab Magalona looks stunning in her white boho dress as she graces the launch of the new collection.
She says, “I'm so happy to hear about the concrete steps @hm has been making to use 100% sustainable materials for their products by the year 2030.”
