Proper preparation prevents poor performance.

Proper preparation prevents poor performance.

This quote is true even when working out in order to maximize your time and get better results.

But if you are still clueless on what are the things you should do before hitting the gym, we consulted certified fitness trainer Coach Joshua dela Cruz ”Josh” Pineda of Anytime Fitness to share his knowledge about the topic.

In his seven years as a licensed fitness coach, he has observed that gym goers often forget these things before prepping for a workout.

Eat first

Coach Josh has encountered people not eating anything before coming to the gym.

He said flat-out that this is 'dangerous' since you need the calories you get from food to serve as energy in any physical activity.

According to verywellfit.com, Calories in food provide energy in the form of heat so that our bodies can function. Our bodies store and "burn" calories as fuel.

“Madalas walang laman ng tiyan nila bago mag-workout kasi nagpapayat daw. Medyo bad kasi yun kasi magwe-weights ka lalo na pag first time mo mag-gym.

“So walang laman tiyan mo, magi-sky flakes lang ako [tapos] tubig karamihan ganun tapos mahihilo [then] hihimatayin.

“Kasi nga sa sobrang baba ng calorie nila, tapos first time nila sa gym. Banat dito, banat doon.”

Remember never starve yourself thinking that it will help you burn more calories in your body.

Warm up is a must

Fitness trainers sound like a broken record every time they stress the importance of stretching, but it is a cardinal rule that we should all follow.

Coach Josh explained “Importante kasi 'yun para mabuhay 'yung dugo mo 'tsaka muscle mo. Huwag mo bibiglain,”

According to him, people often get injuries because they skip their warm-up exercises.

Get enough sleep

Did you know that you must sleep before doing any exercise for it to actually work?

In an article written by Ashley Mateo in EverydayHealth.com, she discussed the importance of sleep.

She pointed out "that sleep gives our body time to recover, conserve energy, and repair and build up the muscles worked during exercise."

This was echoed by Coach Josh saying that lack of sleep hampers your workout routine.

He said, “Huwag kang puyat, para okay yung kundisyon mo [sa gym].”

Consult a fitness trainer

Like when you are sick and doctors warn you about self-medicating, you should keep in mind to consult a fitness expert first before doing any exercise.

Yes, it might be intimidating, but talking to them will ensure that you'll get the proper knowledge about using any gym equipment or the proper way to execute an exercise.

Coach Josh also shot down the habit of watching workout videos at home and trying it for themselves without knowing whether they can actually perform it or is it the right workout for their body type.
