In a recent #ArtistTakeover video, Ruru shared some of his fitness knowledge which he has gained over the years of improving his physique. He does this by narrowing down the most common gym myths and explained why they're false.

Read on:

Myth # 1: Rest days aren't necessary

Ruru explained the process of muscle recovery, “Siyempre kailangan muna ng muscles natin mag-recover dun mag-start mag-grow 'yung muscles natin kapag nandoon sila sa time ng recovery.”

True enough, Reader's Digest Best Health says this statement is true, “You need recovery days for those muscles to rest, just like you need sleep every day.”

Myth # 2: You can burn off last night's fast food with a trip to the gym

“Calories of the food aren't the same. Kunwari sabihin natin last night, you ate fries or salad, depende pa rin siya kung gaano katindi 'yung workout mo,” he said.

As Men's Fitness explains, the type of food you're eating will cause your hormones “to store or burn fat, boost or crash metabolism, and build or break down muscle.”

Myth # 3: Wipe down exercise equipment with your towel to keep the germs away

For hygienic purposes, Ruru recommends using different towels for mats and wiping the body. “It's better na mag-gloves ka na lang siguro or extra towel para 'yun 'yung pang-wipe mo,” he narrated.

Similarly, Glamour.com has found a study that says 63 percent of exercise equipment at the gym is covered in rhinoviruses that cause colds.

Myth # 4: Crunches aren't the key to flat abs, do planks, leg raises, and squats instead

Ruru advises combining crunches with other forms of exercise for better results, he said, “It doesn't burn a lot of calories, kaysa mag-crunches ka, I think it's better na mag-planks ka rin and leg raises. Ako nakakatulong sa'kin 'yung squats kasi you're using your core.”

Reader's Digest Best Health also says doing crunches involve holding the back of your head as you perform this exercise, putting you at risk for injuries so extra care is needed.

Myth # 5: The more you sweat, the more you burn

Ruru clarified, “The biological response of your body depends on your body type. “Kung 'yung body mo paiwisin, ganoon talaga.”

Sweating doesn't always mean detox. A more effective route would be to focus on hydration and eating a clean, fiber-filled diet, according to Reader's Digest Best Health.
