Celebrity hothlete John Vic de Guzman made a name first as a collegiate volleyball player for the De La Salle - College of St. Benilde, and then as a professional athlete bearing the title of captainship for the Philippine Men's National Volleyball Team. But while Volleyball holds a special place in the heart of this Kapuso star, he also champions another physical activity and that is biking.
In an exclusive interview with GMANetwork.com, John Vic enumerates the reasons why he fell in love with this hobby and why you should try it too.
Biking is a good alternative to transportation, especially during the pandemic.
John Vic has been spending a lot of saddle time during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was during this time when he grew a deeper appreciation for traveling on two wheels.
He says, “Well unang-una kasi nagka-pandemic, wala masyadong public transportation. So, isa siya sa magiging mode of transportation and mas mabilis kang makakarating sa mga pupuntahan mo kasi makakaiwas ka sa traffic.”
Biking is a healthy way to bond with friends.
When the pandemic hit, John Vic, like most of us, was forced to shelter at home and spend time away from friends. Most of his activities got canceled or interrupted, including his regular training with his volleyball teammates. But because of biking, the Kapuso star discovered a healthy and safe way to continue bonding with people in the new normal.
“Ako kasi parang nagba-bike kasi ako [as] barkada bonding.
Biking teaches focus, coordination, and teamwork.
Biking does not only serve as a fun activity that he shares with his friends and teammates. It has also helped him work on his focus and coordination and develop the discipline of teamwork.
Biking is a good cardio workout.
For John Vic who still has his eyes fixed on the gold medal at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games, he turns to bike for an effective yet enjoyable cardio workout.
Biking reduces stress and anxiety.
During these uncertain times, biking has played a huge role to alleviate the negativity in John Vic's life. For the Kapuso star, it has been his escape from stress and anxiety.
“To release your stress. Maganda siyang way para matanggal 'yung stress mo kasi lalo na ngayong pandemic, ang daming nangyayari, ang daming nahihirapan, may mga sakuna pa so dahil sa pagba-bike, naa-appreciate mo 'yung nature and nare-release mo 'yung stress mo.”
Aside from biking, John Vic also does regular home exercises to keep a sound mind and body.
