Tucked in the beautiful street of Sergeant Esguerra in Quezon City is a humble Vietnamese eatery called Saigon Corner PH that offers authentic Vietnamese dishes daily.
The restaurant prides itself on serving the best Banh Mi, pho, and rolls in town thanks to the guidance of their head chef, Chef Trung, who has trained not only in Japan but also in Vietnam.
Like most restaurants during the pandemic, Saigon Corner PH temporarily closed its doors to curb the coronavirus disease.
While it has already resumed its operations in Manila, this humble and homey Vietnamese eatery started a trend called “Pasa-buy Gulay” within their community to help potential customers buy fresh vegetables when sourcing ingredients for their meals.
Aside from that, they also opened their doors for delivery services making their delectable menu items readily available to those who prefer to stay at home.
In an episode of Pop Talk, host Tonipet Gaba, actress Valeen Montenegro, and Chef Myke “Tatung” Sarthou review some of the more popular items they've carefully infused with Filipino touches to suit locals' taste.
Here's what they have to say:
Special Pho with Bulalo - ★★★★★
PhP 440
Meanwhile, Chef Tatung says, “Meron din siyang hoisin sauce or sriracha sauce on the side if you want it to be more spicy or flavorful. Kuha ka lang ng onti and mix it in your bowl.
“'Yung broth niya is very clean kasi mukhang tinanggal nila 'yung excess fat para 'pag humigop ka ng soup hindi kaagad magfi-film 'yung lips mo kasi they strained it out and 'di siya masebo.
“Maganda rin 'yung ginawa nila sa beef nila kasi hindi siya 'yung chunks of meat. Akala ko nung una, 'pag bulalo 'yung mahirap na kainin na meat, but by the way its cut, it's like samgyupsal na kukuha ka lang ng onti, you put it on the noodle and the herbs, you dip it in the sriracha, tapos kakainin mo na siya.
“And ito ring broth niya, when you boil the bones for the pho, you always roast the shallot, the cinnamon, the spices, before adding it to the broth. So may slightly smokey at fragrant after taste dahil dun sa mga isinali sa broth.”
Bo Ne Banh Mi Sliced Beef Vietnamese Sandwich - ★★★★★
PhP 285
Tonipet Gaba shares, “Banh Mi is Vietnamese for bread. Ang traditional Banh Mi is composed of pork as meat filling, but this has beef, fried egg, pickled vegetables, and you may drizzle sriracha if you want. Ang maganda sa DIY na ganito, pwede mo gawin 'yung flavors na gusto mo.”
Vietnamese Style Balut - ★★★★★
Php 180
Valeen Montenegro says, “Feel ko for someone who doesn't want to try balut, feel ko ito makakapag-change ng mind nila.
“All in all, it's good pero in terms of packaging, if we can use less plastic, why not? Pero 'di talaga kaya ngayon, e. Ang masa-suggest ko lang is the carton box when it came to me lumambot na 'yung kahon. So mas maganda kung may aluminum lining para lang 'di siya mag-spill. However, it's still appetizing.”
