Toyo Eatery

The restaurant in Makati ranks number 49 and was named as the “Best Restaurant in the Philippines”

Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list was just revealed and only one restaurant from the Philippines landed on the prestigious list. It's Makati-based, Toyo Eatery.

The list was revealed via a live online event on Thursday, March 25.

Owned by chef Jordy Navarra and wife May, Toyo Eatery was opened in 2016. It is known for its modern take on Filipino food with a focus on the use of local ingredients while staying true to Filipino culture and identity.

It debuted in Asia's 50 Best Restaurant list in 2019 at No. 43. It was ranked at No. 44 in 2020.

The top five restaurants in Asia are: No. 5 Gaggan Anand, Bangkok in Thailand; No. 4 Le Du, Bangkok (Best Restaurant in Thailand); No. 3 Den, Tokyo in Japan (Best Restaurant in Japan); No. 2 Odette, Singapore (Best Restaurant in Singapore); and No. 1 The Chairman, Hong Kong (Best Restaurant in China and Asia).

This year, the 50 Best expanded the list by introducing a separate list, called “Essence of Asia” and also naming the restaurants that ranked from 51 to 100.

“This year, however, we are taking the opportunity to recognize more restaurants in Asia than ever before. We believe that by increasing the number of venues we feature, it will maximize the support for the recovery of the hospitality sector in 2021,” said Asia's 50 Best Restaurants director of content William Drew.

Last week, it released the first-ever Essence of Asia, which is an unranked list of restaurants that “represent the spirit of Asian gastronomy.”

Four Philippine restaurants were included in the list, namely, Farmer's Daughter (Baguio City), Bale Dutung (Pampanga), Earth Kitchen, and Hapag (both located in Quezon City).

Meanwhile, last Tuesday, March 23, Asia's 50 Best Restaurants revealed the restaurants that ranked from 51st to 100th. Two Filipino restaurants made it to the list: Antonio's (No. 84) Gallery by Chele (No. 90).
