Celebrate Devil's Food Cake Day by getting one from these local bakeshops.

May 19 is Devil's Food Cake Day. Although the cake has a sinister sounding name, the dense, rich chocolate layer cake is irresistibly good.

There are a few theories about where the Devil Food's Cake got its name.

Cooksinfo.com believes that the Devil's Food Cake originated in the Southern United States, and was already quite popular even before it first appeared in print in 1902, in Sara Tyson Rorer's Mrs. Rorer's New Cook Book.

Meanwhile, Baking Illustrated says that the Devil's Food Cake was named as such during the late 1900s, when the norm was to give cakes fancy names such as Death by Chocolate and many others.

Reportedly, the Devil's Food Cake is the lone cake to outlast that era and remain popular up to this day.

The Devil's Food Cake has a dense texture and intense chocolate flavor, making it the exact opposite of the Angel Food Cake, which is light, airy and usually white or yellow in color.

Nowadays, many attribute the cake's name to its “sinfulness” since it has more chocolate than the regular chocolate cake.

If you have never tried it, then now is the perfect time to do so.

Below is GMA Lifestyle's list of some of the dessert shops in the Philippines that offer the sinfully good Devil's Food Cake.
