Facebook partnered with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Chan Zuckerberg Biohub to conduct the #BuildForCOVID19 Hackathon. Other technology companies and platforms participating in this event are Microsoft, Twitter, TikTok, Pinterest, Giphy, WeChat, and Slack.

Mark Zuckerberg announced the hackathon in a Facebook post on March 25. He said, “#BuildForCOVID19 is open to anyone who wants to participate, and I encourage all of you who can to join.”

The CEO of Facebook added, “Hackathons have always been an important part of how we come up with new ideas and projects at Facebook -- features like Blood Donations and Crisis Response were first built during hackathons and are now used by millions of people worldwide.

“I'm hopeful that some useful prototypes and ideas will come out of this one as well.”

The COVID-19 Global Online Hackathon aims to build software solutions that can help fight the coronavirus pandemic in both local and global scale.

Due to the isolation experienced within communities in this time of global health emergency, the hackathon aims “to create an online space where developers could ideate, experiment and build software solutions to help address this crisis.”

Participants can work on different themes, but these are the six that were suggested: Health, Vulnerable Populations, Businesses, Community, Education, and Entertainment.
