When a city is locked during quarantine, almost everything comes to a standstill and that also includes your car.
Since the quarantine can last for weeks to months, one must make sure that the car remains healthy and ready for any kind of medical and other emergencies.
That's why car enthusiast and GMA News anchor Arnold Clavio shared a few tips on keeping your beloved mechanical babies in check amid the lockdown.
In the post, he credited David Holecek, manager of KC Complete Auto Service, on what one must do to their car during the month-long hiatus.
“'If you plan on storing your car for a couple of weeks, or up to 30 days, you should probably fill the gas tank all the way up. That helps prevent moisture buildup that would get in your fuel system and then maybe affect the drivability of the car when you do go to use it again,' he said.”
Furthermore, Igan added nine essential tips in keeping cars up to speed before the quarantine is over.
Here are the items to remember:
1. Always want to make sure your oil is fresh and changed.
2. The battery needs to be maintained and charged at all times.
3. Start the car at least once or twice a week.
4. Make sure it gets up to full operating temperature before you shut it back down.
5. Make sure your PSI is what is said on the door, and maybe even 5 PSI higher than that if it's going to sit for an extended period of time.
6. Park your car on wooden blocks underneath the tires to keep the cement from drawing the air pressure out of them.
7. Clean your car before you store it, that will clean off any winter debris, salt, brine, and dirt underneath the car and on the outside of the car.
8. Clean the inside of the car and that will prevent any smells or mold building up.
9. Do not set the parking brake if you're going to park it for more than 30 days because the pads or shoes can seize to the drum or the rotor and cause problems down the road when you move it.
With many stuck inside their homes, and with cars sitting idle outside, now is the ideal time to tackle the litany of things vehicles could benefit from to stay healthy.
Kill some downtime and consider these quarantine car-maintenance jobs that can all be done safely from your own home.
