LOOK: One of Kara David's Project Malasakit scholars is now a budding visual artist

By Racquel Quieta

Kara David must be beaming with pride right now as one of the scholars of Project Malasakit, Christian Dayo, is now a budding visual artist whose artwork is featured in Cevio Art Haus' “New Daily Pattern” art exhibit.

In an Instagram post, the 'Pinas Sarap' host congratulated Christian on his latest achievement as an artist and shared his inspiring journey.

Kara revealed that Christian was featured in Howie Severino's award-winning 2016 documentary “Busal,” which delved into the lives of the urban poor whose lives were affected by extrajudicial killings.

Back then, Christian was a 20-year-old teacher for at-risk youths. He grew up under the bridge and told Howie Severino that their family experience a great deal of discrimination because of it.

He said people would often look down on them just because they live under the bridge, and this is why Christian was determined to finish his studies.

“'Pag walang edukasyon po parang kumbaga kulang 'yung pagkatao mo eh. Kumbaga hindi ka pwedeng magsalita sa iba, kumbaga sasabihin nila, 'O, 'di ka naman nakapag-aral. Hindi ka naman nakapagtapos ah.'

“Kapag nakapagtapos ka, mas okay ka. Mas angat ka kasi nakapagtapos ka. May degree ka eh. May hawak kang diploma.”

At the time, Christian was also into the theater, where he acts with fellow underprivileged people.

Fast-forward to five years later, Christian is now into another form of art; this time the visual arts.

Christian is one of the college art students from EARIST Manila whose artworks are featured in the online art exhibit titled “New Daily Pattern.”

The said exhibit showcases drawings and paintings of student artists that depict the Filipinos' lives in the new normal.

Christian's 36x24 painting titled 'Hole-shit' shows a person with a sad facial expression, stitched lips, and a hole in his or her stomach. It seems to be about depression in the time of the pandemic.

The “New Daily Pattern” art exhibit will be available for viewing until September 30.

Congratulations, Christian Dayo! We can't wait to see your other awesome artworks in the future.
