Here are the list of movies and documentaries to watch to better understand the events during the Philippine Martial Law.

Philippine cinema has always been an important instrument that helps educating Filipinos about our history. Movies and documentaries allow us to see different perspectives of social and political issues. These films tell us stories that we might not know about our country and its darkest chapter.

To mark 49th anniversary of the late dictator President Ferdinand Marcos's declaration of Martial Law, here's a list of films that tackles stories during Marcos' regime.

Barber's Tales

Barber's Tales is the story about a newly-widowed woman Marilou played by Kapuso actress Eugene Domingo. She took her late husband's job as a barber in a male-dominated community during the 1970's Marcos era.

Kagat ng Mosquito Press

Kagat ng Mosquito Press is a documentary by Howie Severino it focuses on the press freedom and journalism industry of the country during Marcos' dictatorship.

The Kingmaker

The Kingmaker is a documentary centred on the former first lady Imelda Marcos and her participation in Marcos' regime as the dictator's wife. The film also tackles the impact of historical revisionism in the country.

Dekada '70

This film is based on the award-winning novel of Lualhati Bautista Dekada '70. It journeys with the story of Bartolome Family, including Amanda (Vilma Santos) and her husband Julian (Christopher De Leon) and their five sons, Jules (Piolo Pascual) who is an activist, Emmanuel (Marvin Agustin) a writer, Isagani (Carlos Agassi) US Navy member, Jason (Danilo Barrios), and Benjamin (John Wayne Sace) the youngest. Amanda seeks justice for all the abuses they got during the Marcos dictatorship.

Respeto

This 2017 Cinemalaya hip-hop themed film is about human rights violation and extrajudicial killings. It connects two people from different generations; one is the aspiring rapper Hendrix (Abra) and a Martial law survivor and poet Doc (Dido de la Paz). Respeto earned several awards from different film festivals, including 2017 Independent Film Festival and 2018 Cyprus Film Days International Festival.

ML is about the story of a college student named Carlo (played by Tony Labrusca) who thinks that Martial Law wasn't all that bad not until his life is intertwined with a former soldier 'Colonel' played by the late veteran actor Eddie Garcia.

Mula sa Kung Ano ang Noon

This five-and-a-half-hour movie is directed by Lav Diaz. In a black-and-white theme, the film tackles strange events that happened in an isolated village in the Philippines in 1972 during Marcos's regime.

1081

1081 is a one-hour documentary by Kara David. In this special documentary, military men, human rights victims, politicians, and journalists tell their story of what happened during Martial Law days. It aims to educate the younger generation about what transpired during the Marcos era.

Katips

Katips is a two-hour film based on the 2016 stage musical of Philstagers Films titled Katips: Ang Mga Bagong Katipunero, which tackles the story of student activists from the Katipunan during the time of Martial law.

Liway

Liway is a 2018 film directed by Kip Oebanda. This film, which mirrors his real life, is about a young boy named Dakip growing up in a prison during Martial law. This young boy is the son of anti-Marcos objector known as Commander Liway portrayed by Kapuso actress Glaiza De Castro.

Alaala: A Martial Law Special

In 2017, during the 45th anniversary of the late President Marcos Sr. declaration of Martial Law, the GMA Public Affairs produced a special film titled Alaala: A Martial law Special which is about the journey of award-winning screenwriter and Martial law victim Bonifacio Ilagan. The cast features a star-studded cast including Alden Richards, Bianca Umali, Rocco Nacino, and Gina Alajar.


Maynila Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag

Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag, which is set during the middle part of Martial law, was created by the late national artist and Philippine cinema icon Lino Brocka. This award-winning film features the tragic love story of Julio Madiaga played by Bembol Roco and Ligaya Paraiso played by Hilda Koronel.
