Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz made history on July 26, 2021, when she won the country's first-ever Olympic gold medal in the Tokyo Games for Women's 55-kilogram weightlifting, ending a near 100-year wait.
Diaz lifted a record 127 kilograms in the clean and jerk, which was also an Olympic record.
Both Diaz and world record holder Liao Qiuyun of China had one attempt left, where Liao lifted before her and cleared 126 kilograms for the lead.
The 30-year-old Filipina had just one more attempt left, and it all came down to the dramatic final lift. Diaz lifted her final weight of 127 kilograms over her head and heard the buzzer, she dropped it and burst into tears as members of her team came over to embrace her.
Diaz totaled an Olympic record of 224 kilograms and Liao settled for silver with 223 kilograms. She became the first Filipina double Olympic medalist after her 2016 Rio Olympic silver medal conquest.
