Even the most casual pageant fan knows the connection that current reigning Miss Universe Philippines Michelle Dee shares with the iconic mambabatok, Apo Whang-Od.
During the evening gown competition of the 2023 Miss Universe pageant, Michelle wowed audiences with her standout Mark Bumgarner gown inspired by Apo Whang-Od. The gown featured symbols for fertility and sustenance, strength and health, as well as safety and protection.
Michelle had also previously described Whang-Od as “a true icon and the last of her kind, a symbol of bravery, beauty, and inclusivity”.
A couple of days ago, Michelle revealed that she has now finally been inked by Apo Whang-Od herself, an experience that she described as “an amazing way to start the month of May and my final days as your reigning queen”.
