A look of glee was seen on Geena Rocero's face when asked if trans women were given the chance to compete for the coveted crown of Miss Universe some 10 years ago, back when she was only 26 years old, will she join the pageant?
“Absolutely! If the whole conversation of inclusion and trans women being allowed to participate in MUP at the time when I was there I would absolutely join,” she told GMANetwork.com on Saturday, October 17.
The American supermodel, who was once a beauty queen, confessed that it was her passion to join the competition ever since she was immersed in the glamour of pageantry at a young age.
“It was my passion. It was what I was born to do, trained to do. I think, if that happened 10 years ago I would have absolutely joined,” she continued.
Today, Geena is using her voice to advocate for the inclusion of trans women in the beauty pageant industry in partnership with the Miss Universe Organization.
“Certainly now, my speaking about trans rights and advocating for the inclusion of trans women not just in the Miss Universe competition but all of the pageants all over the world.
“You know, I've been given this platform and I'm speaking about it.
She continued, “I think the conversation needs to continue not only in the Philippines but in the whole world.”
Aside from being a supermodel, an activist, and a beauty queen she was also hailed as the first transgender Asian Pacific Islander by Playboy magazine.
