They say that reinvention is the mother of necessity. This is widely true in the cutthroat world of show business where fans are always on the lookout for something new.
For some celebrities, reinventing means branching out to another platform to show their versatility.
It can also be a case of striking while the iron is hot, as fans crave to see more of their idols, whatever means possible.
One tried and tested formula that celebrities go to as an alternative is the recording business. It makes perfect sense considering that we Filipinos naturally love music and singing.
For these Kapuso stars, dabbling into recording has opened doors of opportunities that boosted their careers even more.
Hot from the success of the TV series Marimar, Marian Rivera jumped into the recording scene with the release of Marian Rivera Dance Hits in 2008. The 12-track record under Universal Records was a compilation of songs danced and choreographed by Marian. A follow-up album titled, Retro Crazy, produced the hit dance track, “Sabay Sabay Tayo.” Both albums sold well, achieving platinum and gold status, respectively.
Alden's recording career was already on track even prior to the AlDub phenomenon. His 2013 self-titled album under Universal Records achieved platinum status. His follow up albums - Wish I May (2015), Say It Again (2016), and Until I See You Again (2018) - were all produced by GMA Records.
Wish I May, in particular, was a massive commercial success, achieving eight times platinum status in September 2016.
Before she became the fashion icon that she is today, there was once Heart Evangelista the budding young actress - and yes, the singer. Heart's self-titled album was released in 2003 and included ten tracks including a cover of Jose Mari Chan's “Please Be Careful With My Heart.”
Recently, Heart announced that she will be releasing an old and unheard single of hers titled “Breathe You” digitally. The song was recorded around the same time that she was working on her debut album.
Solenn dabbled into the music scene with the release of her 2011 self-titled debut album, Solenn. Her next album, SOS, came out in 2013 and was certified platinum. In 2016, Solenn dropped her third album (again titled, Solenn) containing songs that she mostly co-wrote.
The Comedy Queen ventured into the recording scene in 2004 with the release of her debut EP, Ang Tanging Ina N'yo, containing six novelty songs. AiaI signed a contract with GMA Records in 2017 for her new single, “Walang Pinipili.”
Few would remember that veteran actor Gabby Concepcion has recorded an album in 2008 to mark his showbiz comeback. Gabby's self-titled album was a mix of his favorite OPM and foreign songs such as “Iisa Pa Lamang,” “Give Me A Chance”, “Hanggang,” “Just Once,” and “When I Met You.”
He released his second cover album, Unforgettable, in 2010, which included the songs “Moon River,” “Can't Take My Eyes Off You,” “Have I Told You Lately,” and “Cool Change.”
Aside from being a good actress, Jennylyn Mercado is also known for her great singing voice. To date, the StarStruck alumna has released five studio albums, three of which were produced by GMA Records. Her two first albums, Living the Dream (2004) and Letting Go (2005), sold very well enough for them to bagged platinum and gold awards, respectively. Her singing discography also includes two compilation albums released in 2008 and 2013 by GMA Records, and 2 EPs produced by PolyEast Records in 2012, and Ivory Music in 2016.
Dennis's love for music is well-known. Thus, it's no surprise that the longtime Kapuso actor has dabbled into singing and recording to beef up his accomplishments. His 2007 self-titled album featured 12 tracks including covers of “All Out of Love” and “Love Is All That Matters,” plus a duet with Regine Velasquez for the song, “Magtatagpong Muli.”
In 2013, GMA Records produced TomDen - an eight-track album featuring Dennis and Tom Rodriguez. The album contained songs as heard and featured in their successful GMA TV series, My Husband's Lover.
Dingdong's lone recording effort is one to remember. The Dingdong Dantes Experience was an audio/visual set containing a mini coffee table book of exclusive pictures, a DVD of music videos, and a CD featuring six international songs personally selected by Dingdong. The album was well-received and turned gold a week after its official release.
Coming from a showbiz clan of good actors, Gabby surprised the public when he dropped his debut album, Loving, in 2001. Gabby would prove skeptics wrong when he won three music awards from various award-giving bodies -- Most Promising Male Artist, Best Performance by a New Male Recording Artist and Most Promising Male Singer/Performer.
In 2006, GMA Records released Gabby's second album titled, Sa Di Kalayuan. One track in the album “Muli”, was chosen as a soundtrack of the Koreanovela, Yellow Handkerchief, aired on GMA-7.
