Pro golfer Tiger Woods had sustained multiple leg injuries, including a compound fracture and shattered ankle, after crashing his car en route to a Los Angeles golf course to film for GolfTV.
Multiple reports said that the 45-year-old champion was driving alone near Rancho Palos Verdes when his Genesis GV80 “crossed the central reservation and flipped over” at around 7 am.
The first officer at the scene, Deputy Carlos Gonzalez, said he was very fortunate to be alive after the accident and that the golfer was wearing a seatbelt during the crash.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva added, “He was alive, he was conscious. He was not able to get up as that was not an option.”
Villanueva also said that Woods was traveling at a greater speed than normal but noted that the area has a high frequency of accidents.
“There were no skid marks, no braking. He hit the curb, hit a tree, and there were several rollovers.”
Recalling when he was at the scene, Deputy Carlos Gonzalez said that Woods wasn't concerned about his injuries, which is very common in car accidents.
He said, “He told me his name was Tiger, and at that point, I immediately recognized him. He seemed lucid and calm.
“He didn't seem concerned about his injuries, which is common in car accidents. They may be in shock and pain, not felt until later.”
Woods was immediately taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he is now undergoing surgery to correct the multiple injuries on his legs.
His agent, Mark Steinberg, clarified, “Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries. He is currently in surgery, and we thank you for your privacy and support.”
Since hearing about the accident, many athletes have sent their support and prayers for Tiger Woods throughout social media.
Former basketball star Alex Rodriguez said, “Praying for my brother @TigerWoods as we all anxiously await more news. Thinking of him and his entire family.”
Meanwhile, Stephen Curry said, “Heal up quickly @TigerWoods. Praying for you and your family. God is in control always. Stay strong.”
Fellow PGA Tour golfer Justin Thomas said, “Sick to my stomach right now. Praying for @TigerWoods and hoping for an amazing recovery. Thinking about his entire family and team, as all of us are sending our best wishes. We know TW is a fighter. Get well soon [Tiger]!
