Jose Luis Jolo Salinas

The taekwondo student-athlete cites Maine Mendoza as his celebrity crush.

Jose Luis “Jolo” Salinas is a self-confessed “bully” during his much younger years - something that he's not proud of looking back.

One sport, however, changed all of that.

“Taekwondo got into my life and instilled in me the value of discipline,” the 20-year-old said.

Since then, Jolo has embraced the sport wholeheartedly and even gained a scholarship as a student-athlete for the San Sebastian College - Recoletos in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Prior to joining San Sebastian, Jolo competed for the Ateneo de Manila University where he won a Gold medal and Rookie of the Year honors.

Taekwondo, to say the least, opened new opportunities, taught him the importance of sportsmanship, and allowed Jolo to meet new friends.

We caught up with Jolo to find out more about him on and off the mat.

When not competing or studying, Jolo enjoys spending his free time playing kalimba and the guitar or engage in video games to keep himself preoccupied.

Future chef

His dream job is to be a chef on a cruise ship.

Sports is life

Jolo plays other sports such as football, badminton, and table tennis. Sports, in general, relaxes the young student-athlete.

Favorite dishes

Jolo's favorite food is pinakbet cooked by his mom. He also likes his father's laing specialty.

His Kapuso crush

“I always watch Eat Bulaga! because of [the] 'Bawal Judgmental' [segment],” he said.

Jolo added, “My favorite local actor is Dingdong Dantes.”

Kapuso Maine Mendoza, meanwhile, is his “celebrity crush.”

“My pre-game rituals are a bit weird,” confided Jolo.

“I will kneel beside my coach and pray, and do some ballet feet in the rubber mats. Before a round starts, I do the sign of the cross then clap loudly.”

Jolo is fond of pointing his finger to the sky after a win. It's his way to thank God for the victory and for keeping him safe during the match.
