Lou Ottens changed the world of music when he introduced the cassette tape.
Dutch engineer and inventor of the cassette tape, Lou Ottens, has died. He was 94.
According to reports, he passed away in his hometown in Duziel in the Netherlands, which was announced by his family.
Ottens and his team at Royal Philips in Belgium changed the world of music when they introduced the cassette tape in 1963. The small rectangular plastic case containing an analog magnetic tape became wildly popular in the recording industry from the '70s until the '90s.
According to BBC, over 100 billion cassette tapes have been sold worldwide since its launch.
In recent years, there has been a resurgence of cassette tape use. Some musicians have been pushing for its revival and even big names such as Lady Gaga have released music on cassette tapes.
Other artists that have released music on cassette tapes include 5 Seconds of Summer, Dua Lipa, and Selena Gomez.
According to an NME report, there was a 103% increase in cassette tape sales in the first quarter of 2020.
