The man behind Rustan's died at the age of 100.

Bienvenido R. Tantoco Sr., co-founder of Rustan Group of Companies, died on Tuesday, July 6.

His passing was confirmed by his family, describing the entrepreneur as a “loving grandfather” to his grandsons” and that “he lived his best life and reached the age of 100.”

Tantoco founded Rustan's in 1952 together with his wife Gliceria Rustia-Tantoco.

The first Rustan's store was opened in San Marcelino Street in Manila.

Rustan's pioneered luxury retail in the country by carrying international brands, including Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior, previously not available in the local market.

The business grew and to this day continues to expand its roster of international luxury brands.

Some of the big fashion items found in Rustan's department stores today are Givenchy, Prada, Gucci, Tory Burch, and Alexander McQueen, among many others.

At the time of his passing, Rustan's portfolio of partner brands ranges from apparel, watches, beauty and personal care, luggage, footwear, lifestyle products, accessories, and home items.

There are currently five Rustan's department stores in the country

Tantoco's contribution earned him the moniker “the father of luxury retail in the Philippines.”

He also served as the Philippine ambassador to the Vatican in 1983 before relinquishing the post after the People Power Revolution in 1986.
