American pop star Britney Spears achieved legal triumph in her fight to gain control of her freedom.
Britney's father Jamie Spears has been appointed as conservator of her US$60 million estate and was designated to handle her finances since 2008.
Los Angeles Judge Brenda Penny declared suspension of Jamie Spears as Britney's conservator in a hearing on September 29.
Additionally, Britney's lawyer, Matthew S. Rosengart, spoke out in defense of Britney against Jamie's handling of the conservatorship. “My client, Britney Jean Spears, testified that James P. Spears abused her, subjected her to cruelty, and she cannot bear his toxic presence for a single day more,” Rosengart reportedly said according to Time.
John Zabel, an accountant, has been appointed to temporarily replace Jamie in the role of conservator of Britney's estate. Meanwhile the singer's personal care manager, Jodi Montgomery, will continue to serve as conservator of Britney's person.
Among Britney's next steps is planning to terminate her conservatorship altogether in the next 30 to 45 days.
A court date to consider Britney's request has been set on November 12. An additional hearing was scheduled for December 13 to consider other matters in Britney's case.
Over the past three months, Britney has made a plea with her legal team to end the court-ordered conservatorship, describing her father's handling of her money and restrictions on her activities as "cruelty."
"I just want my life back. It's been 13 years, and it's enough," Britney said in a court hearing back in June.
Britney Spears was recently engaged to Sam Asghari. She has two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden, with ex-husband Kevin Federline.
