The two met in 1987 at Microsoft and tied the knot in 1994 in Hawaii.

Bill and Melinda Gates are splitting up after 27 years of marriage.

The two made the announcement on their Twitter accounts earlier today, May 4 (May 3 in the U.S.).

“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage.

"Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives,” the joint statement reads.

“We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.

"We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”

The couple founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000 and has been involved in various noble initiatives including poverty alleviation, climate change, and public health.

Bill is the co-founder of Microsoft and is credited for revolutionizing the computer industry by developing user-friendly software and making it accessible to people.

The huge commercial success of Microsoft propelled Bill to become the richest man in the world from 1995 to 2017 except in 2010 and 2013.

He is currently the fourth richest person in the world behind LVMH's Bernald Arnault, Tesla's Elon Musk, and Amazon's Jeff Bezos.

Bill met Melinda in 1987 when she was working for Microsoft as a marketing manager. They married in 1994 in Hawaii and have three children.

In March last year, Bill announced that he was stepping down from Microsoft board to devote himself more to solving “some of the world's biggest problems.”

CNN Business reported that Melinda filed for divorce in King County in Washington on Monday.

Aside from her work in the foundation, Melinda is also the founder of investment firm Pivotal Ventures and the author of the book The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World published in 2019.
