The tourism industry was greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The lack of tourists led to business closures and unemployment. Thousands of Filipinos in the tourism and hospitality sector lost their jobs espeically after the government implemented stringent measures to combat the spread of the virus, specifically, imposing lockdowns.

According to Department of Tourism secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, at least 4.8 million Filipinos, whose jobs rely on the tourism sector were severely affected due to the pandemic.

To give our kababayans a bit of context, in 2019, the country recorded 8.26 million international tourist arrivals and 110 million in domestic tourist arrivals.

According to the data of the Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA), the tourism industry contributes 12.7 percent to the Philippine economy.

Now, the hospitality sector is pinning its hope on the successful roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccination program of the government.

As of July 11, more than 3.5 million Filipinos are fully vaccinated against the virus in a report by Inquirer.net.
