Beauty Gonzalez lives in a sprawling home filled with paintings, sculptures and other objet d’art.

But the most beautiful of them all is Beauty herself whose transformation from a reality show star to a respected dramatic actress is something of a work of art.

With her charming ang melodious manner of speaking, Beauty looked back at her beginnings in showbiz and shared a few things she learned along the way.

The reluctant artista

Beauty started her career as one of the contestants of a popular reality show.

“Oh my God! I remember na ayoko talaga sumali ng PBB,” she recalled candidly.  “It’s not for anything else pero I had a good life in Dumaguete. Thanks to my parents, I'm privileged in a way. [I have a] comfortable life so parang iniisip ko, ‘Why would I go to PBB and have no friends and have no house and don’t know anyone in Manila?’ Hindi pa nga ako nakasakay ng eroplano eh, pupunta pa ’ko doon at ikukulong,” she adds.

However, it was her mother who wanted her to leave Dumaguete because she wanted her daughter to see for herself what Manila could offer her.

Beauty wasn’t excited about the idea. All the familiar and comfortable were in her home town. She saw no reason to step out of her comfort zone.

“My mom was really persistent kasi gusto niya akong mag-aral sa Assumption Makati. I really declined kasi I have a house, I have a life, I have my friends in Dumaguete, I have a car, I have everything. Why would I want to come here in Manila, stay in a dorm [where I] don’t know anyone,” she shared.

In the end, her mother still got her way and Beauty reluctantly auditioned for the show.

“I love it a lot because not everyone was given a gift to portray other people’s lives.”

“Hindi nga ako pumila eh. Yaya ko ang pumila kasi I really didn’t want to join. Pumunta ’ko doon na walang ligo. Tinanong ako [kung] sinong gustong sumali. Sabi ko, ‘Nanay ko. Actually, siya na lang papasukin niyo.’ I didn't know na the more you don’t like it, the more they like you,” Beauty revealed.

She ended up as the competition’s fourth runner up. Still, Beauty remains grateful for the experience.

“Kung ano man ang mga plano ko sa loob, nag-iba na lahat. Naging artista na ko, nandito na ’ko and then tuloy tuloy na ’yung work ko. Honestly, ’yung buhay talaga dinadala ka sa mga bagay na hindi mo alam na kailangan mo pala. I’m happy and thankful ako na nakita ng mom ko or nakita ng ibang tao [’yung potential ko] kasi I’m happy with where I am right now. I’m thankful to those people, even though mukha akong lukaret dati,” Beauty says with a laugh.

The realization that
led to reinvention

After her reality show stint, Beauty was given a slew of supporting film and television roles.

She admits that her love for acting did not come to her immediately. She only realized it after she saw a bit of her work on television.

When she started believing that she had so much more to offer, Beauty used her powers of persuasion to convince writers to give her bigger parts.

I had to find ways,” Beauty remembered fondly.

Now, she considers acting a precious gift that must be cherished.

“Lagi akong best friend before and wala akong regret. It was the best training for me to be the supporting actress to all those leading ladies. It was the best training kasi natuto akong umarte.”

“I enjoy it and I learned to love it. I love it a lot because not everyone was given a gift to portray other people’s lives. To have that gift, to have that experience, I’m very grateful and thankful kasi ang saya eh. The next day, ibang tao ka. You’re just portraying these people’s lives and then ’pag nanonood sila, ako pala ’yun. Nakakatuwa na nakukuha mo kung anong gustong mapanood ng mga tao. Just the gift of expressing those feelings and ikaw nanonood ka, ‘Ah ako yun.’ Masaya ’yun. Ang sarap nga ng trabaho na ’yun, eh," Beauty mused.

Aside from that, she also cherishes all the experience she’s gained from playing “supporting” roles.

“Lagi akong best friend before and wala akong regret. It was the best training for me to be the supporting actress to all those leading ladies. It was the best training kasi natuto akong umarte. Natuto ako na ganito pala, ganyan pala gawin ’pag leading lady ka na,” she recalled.

After that, Beauty invested in honing her skills as an actress. What’s admirable about her work ethic is that she takes everything seriously, never leaving anything to chance and guesswork. She’s not the type to wing it. She works hard and goes the extra mile to show to everyone why she deserved the lead role.

“I always keep myself updated. For every show, I always get an acting coach. I ask for meetings with the writers. I ask for meeting with my directors. Hindi puwede pumunta lang ako doon [sa set] for the hell of it. No, I have to be prepared, fully prepared talaga,” she said with conviction.

“You make a mistake. Get over it. There's another day. Try to correct it and move on.”

The multifaceted star

Beauty is already at the stage where she completely trusts her acting abilities and her director. She's no longer the type that would check herself on the monitor after every take just to see how well she did or how she looked in her scenes.

"After cut, a lot of artistas will look at themselves and check. It’s good, whatever practice you do, whatever works for you. Ako, I don’t. I like how it is and I trust my director. I trust myself. I try to trust myself kasi para akong [nagugulo], parang sana ginawa ’ko ’to or ganyan. I’m a perfectionist kasi,” Beauty admitted.

To help her breathe emotions into her roles and be more convincing in the eyes of the viewers, Beauty looked for an acting mentor.

"So nag- aral ako. Kumuha ako ng mga acting coach to find my way kung ano talagang nagwo-work sa akin. That’s what works for me--to create somebody else rather than putting my personal experiences into the character kasi in reality, hindi naman siya si Beauty eh,” she explained.

“I always keep myself updated. For every show, I always get an acting coach. I ask for meetings with the writers. I ask for meeting with my directors. Hindi puwede pumunta lang ako doon [sa set] for the hell of it. No, I have to be prepared, fully prepared talaga.”

Her process now involves creating a whole new persona and filling it with as much detail as she can.

“What works for me is to get myself into character talaga, to study who she is, to immerse myself into her, to create her characteristics, even down to her perfume, to her clothes, to every little bit of detail, that's how I do my craft now," said the actress.

Beauty now considers acting a responsibility.

“It’s a responsibility to portray someone, to be that person, who she is. You have to do your homework as an actor. Do acting workshops, do classes, study about acting. Hindi naman ’yung artista ’pag dating mo doon [sa set], iyak ka na agad. No, you have to create a character. You have to know the climax, everything about it. You have to know the system, the director, the script, the writers. I’m thankful for playing the best friend for many years for me to learn this, this whole craft,” she stated.

Looking back at her career, Beauty admits that she has a few regrets but chooses not to dwell on them.

“Ang daming mga roles na hindi napunta sa akin. You just have to get over it. You have to embrace it. Everything happens for a reason. There must be a reason why it didn’t happen to you, or there must be a reason why you did it that way. Tomorrow’s another day, you can correct another thing. You just have to take it easy. You make a mistake. Get over it. There’s another day. Try to correct it and move on,” she said.

"Focus on fixing what’s wrong. Focus on fixing kung anong kulang, kung anong puwedeng ikakaganda pa. Sooner or later, hindi mo namamalayan, naabot mo na pala ’yung gustong mong maabot.”

Beauty now dedicates her success to her family, especially her young daughter Olivia.

“Lahat naman tayo nagtatrabaho tayo for something that we want in life ’di ba? To be successful, to be earning more than what we need in life, to be feeling good about what we are doing. I’ve really worked hard to reach wherever I want to reach. But sometimes, when at that point, parang ‘Ano pa bang gusto ko? Naabot ko na ba?’ Honestly, hindi ko alam kung naabot ko ba pero I'm really working hard on it. Because of course, I want my family to be proud of me, especially my daughter. I’m working hard and I just realized I’ve been away half of the year. My God, half of the year nawala pala ko sa bahay so in whatever I do in my life, in whatever I do in my career, I make to a point na I want her to be proud of it and she’ll understand why I wasn’t here.”

Beauty is set to be one of the lead stars of the upcoming series Mano Po Legacy: The Flower Sister, the third installment of GMA and Regal Entertainment's television adaptation of the iconic Mano Po film series. Catch it soon on GMA!

“Focus on fixing what’s wrong. Focus on fixing kung anong kulang, kung anong puwedeng ikakaganda pa. Sooner or later, hindi mo namamalayan, naabot mo na pala ’yung gustong mong maabot.”
