From Cebu Dreamer to Next-Gen Leading Man
As he steps into mature roles and earns his mark as a “Next-Gen Leading Man,” John Clifford shows that true artistic evolution happens when you stay anchored in your values while daring to explore new horizons.

Every rising story in Philippine entertainment carries its own rhythm, but for Sparkle actor John Clifford, the tempo was set early on the vibrant shores of Cebu. From performing as a young boy to stepping onto the national stage in Metro Manila, his journey reads like a testament to grit, patience, and staying true to one’s roots.
In an exclusive interview with GMANetwork.com, the young star opened up about the highs, lows, and milestones shaping his career. For Clifford, entering showbiz wasn’t an overnight fairy tale—it was a ride full of sharp twists and turns.
“Siguro, I would say, it’s really a rollercoaster ride kasi, of course, it really wasn’t easy,” John Clifford reflects. “Ang dami ko ring pinagdaanan, ang daming challenges na hinarap ko along the way. It really took time, but eventually, it was all worth it and I’m super happy na ngayon medyo malayo-layo na rin ‘yung naabot ko, pero, malayo pa ‘yung gusto ko marating.”
It is a journey marked not by quick success, but by steady growth, proving that for John Clifford, the ride is just beginning.
Into the Spotlight
Stepping out of his comfort zone in Cebu meant facing distinct obstacles in Manila’s fast-paced entertainment industry; chief among John Clifford’s challenges were language barriers, cultural adaptation, and, like most kids, overcoming shyness.
“Siguro ’yung isa sa biggest challenges ko is ’yung Tagalog ko. Sa mga hindi pa nakakaalam, I’m from Cebu, nahihirapan talaga ako sa accent ko. I really have to join a lot of workshops para mag-improve ako sa Tagalog,” John Clifford shared. “Fortunately, ngayon nagi-improve na ’yung Tagalog ko, medyo nawawala na ’yung accent. Super happy ako kapag kino-compliment ako ng mga tao na ‘Uy Clifford, wala na ’yung accent mo,’ and patuloy na ako nagi-improve sa Tagalog.”
Beyond mastering the language, adjusting socially was another hurdle. Naturally reserved, John Clifford found navigating regional differences in humor and communication difficult when building rapport on set. “Sobrang mahiyain ko talaga, hindi ako masyadong friendly kasi parang hindi ko pa nage-gets ’yung humor ng mga taga-Maynila. So every time na nagjo-joke ako ng parang Cebuano na humor, medyo iba ’yung pagka-express niya sa Tagalog. Same naman ng humor, pero ’yung pagka-express iba, so nahihirapan pa ako makihalubilo. Eventually, naka-adjust naman na ako—nage-gets na nila ’yung Bisaya humor, at nage-gets ko na rin ’yung Tagalog humor nila.”
“Siguro, I was raised na talagang ini-instill ko na no matter what, dapat we have to keep our feet on the ground. Kahit anong mangyari you’ll always have to remember kung sino ’yung mga kasama mo dati noong hindi pa ako nag-start ng showbiz.”
While early stints introduced him to the spotlight, finding his footing as an actor required a true turning point. That moment arrived when he joined the hit series You’re My Favorite Song.
Portraying a character that resonated deeply with viewers, John Clifford found not just public appreciation, but the personal confidence he had long been seeking. “I would say na noong nag-start na kami sa You’re My Favorite Song and talagang nakita ko ’yung appreciation ng mga tao lalo na sa character ko. Siguro, doon po lumabas ’yung [side ko] na medyo naging confident na ako.”
He continued, “Back then, everytime I’m on set, medyo andoon pa rin ’yung feeling ng kaba, tapos ’yung hindi pa rin ako masyadong comfortable sa set, pero sa show na ’to, talagang dito ko na-feel ’yung comfortability, hindi lang on-cam pati off-cam din.”
John Clifford also credited his co-stars and crew for creating an encouraging environment that nurtured his growth, turning set anxiety into a genuine drive to refine his craft. “Siguro, it also adds to, factor na rin ‘yung mga kasama ko on set kasi talagang nakakagana talaga and nakaka-motivate na maging better actor.”
Navigating the high-pressure world of showbiz can easily sweep a young actor away, but John Clifford’s Cebuano upbringing served as his permanent anchor. Raised with strong family values, he remains firmly grounded no matter how high his career rises.
“Siguro, I was raised na talagang ini-instill ko na no matter what, dapat we have to keep our feet on the ground. Kahit anong mangyari you’ll always have to remember kung sino ’yung mga kasama mo dati noong hindi pa ako nag-start ng showbiz, ’yung mga [taong] nagga-guide sa akin, ’yung mga nandoon talaga para sa akin kahit sa mga lowest times ko. That’s something na I always remind myself na whatever happens, the biggest things na you can keep in life is ’yung mga tao na nandoon para sa’yo.”
When looking back at the catalysts that transformed his career path, John Clifford pointed to his time inside the iconic Bahay ni Kuya during Pinoy Big Brother Belebrity Collab 2.0. “Of course, ’yung pagpasok ko sa PBB, that was really a very big opportunity kasi I feel like PBB was a big way na napakilala din ako sa mga tao, napakilala ako sa buong Pilipinas. I’m sure na a lot of people are also fans of PBB, including me, bago pa ako naging housemate. I feel like that was really a big factor kung bakit mas lalong na-appreciate ng tao kung sino ako. I’m forever grateful na naging housemate ako sa Bahay ni Kuya,” he continued.
Following PBB, You’re My Favorite Song gave him the ideal platform to showcase his emotional range as an actor. “After naman [ng PBB], s’yempre You’re My Favorite Song. It was really a big opportunity for me na ma-showcase rin ’yung acting skills ko. I’m super blessed na binigyan ako ng opportunity,” he said.
John Clifford’s hard work didn’t go unnoticed. In August 2025, he earned the “Best New Male TV Personality” title at the 37th PMPC Star Awards, a recognition that brought more than just validation; it ignited a fire within him.
“’Yung biggest takeaway ko roon is not really winning the award, pero noong nakita ko ‘yung mga idol ko,” John Clifford told GMANetwork.com. “Grabe ang daming stars noong event na ’yon. Nakita ko sila Joshua Garcia, Kuya Alden Richards, Ms. Rhian Ramos. Para sa akin, super grateful ako na nanalo ako ng award, pero ’yung biggest motivation ko noon ay noong makita ko sila and talagang gusto ko silang maka-work soon. Ngayon, I’m really trying my best para eventually, maka-work ko na sila.”
With his feet firmly planted in his Cebuano values and a clear vision ahead, John Clifford proves that while he has already come a long way, his story on the national stage is still in its first chapter.
“Lagi kong nire-remind ’yung sarili ko na I feel like it’s also good to feel pressured kasi by the time na hindi ka na nape-pressure parang doon ka na hindi mag-i-improve as an actor.”
Two Worlds Inside
Beyond the bright studio lights and polished television personas lies a fascinating duality that defined John Clifford when the cameras stop rolling. Off-camera, he remains the same simple, playful, and adventurous boy from Cebu.
“The real Clifford is someone who is very chill and at the same time very makulit, adventurous. Gusto ko talagang ine-explore ‘yung lahat ng bagay,” he shared. “I love doing sports, I love to play games, mahilig ako gumala sa mga malls, and damit ko sobrang comfortable; everytime na lumalabas ako naka-shorts ako lagi, naka-tsinelas, gano’n po talaga ‘yung totoong ako. Siguro, I’m someone who loves to chill and be comfortable and at the same time have fun.”
Yet behind that relaxed exterior is an actor quietly pushing past his comfort zone. Known as Cebu’s “Dutiful Langga,” John Clifford’s signature warmth comes naturally from his roots.
“I feel like most of it naman talaga, or if not all of it kasi I feel like kasi ’yung mga Cebuanos, they are very known as very malambing, very gentle; feeling ko doon ko rin nakuha ’yung pagka-Dutiful Langga ko,” the young actor said.
After making waves in youth-oriented projects like MAKA and Sparkle Teens, John Clifford knew it was time to evolve. His turning point came when he was offered the role of Calix in the 2026 series You’re My Favorite Song, a character that marked a distinct shift from his usual boy-next-door roles into heavier, mature drama.
“Siguro, ’yung pinaka-turning point was, when I was given the opportunity to play Calix in You’re My Favorite Song kasi that was my first-ever role after joining PBB and I feel like halos lahat naman kami medyo nag-mature after PBB. After noong experience namin [sa loob ng Bahay ni Kuya] we learned a lot, and from that point on, isa talaga sa pinaka-goal ko is ‘yung maiba naman ‘yung character ko. I really want na ’yung character ko medyo nag-step up na compared sa youth-oriented [shows].
Dropping his signature bright smile to play a complex, guarded character brought a mix of excitement and immense pressure. “Honestly super excited talaga, kasi dream role ko na ’yun ever since na iba naman, ibang approach [sa character] kasi laging binibigay sa akin [mga] good boy [roles], “ John Clifford shared.
Taking on a fan-favorite trope is never easy. When John Clifford accepted the part, the excitement came with a heavy dose of nerves and pressure. With so many viewers already hooked on Calix’s storyline, the expectations were high. Stepping into a character that audiences are already obsessed with means carrying the weight of an entire viewers’ hopes for a story that would move them.
“So, I was really super excited pero at the same time, sobrang laking pressure kasi bago pa nag-start ’yung show, marami ng tao na nagsasabi na inaabangan nila ’yung ganoong klaseng trope na ‘Enemies-to-Lovers’ kasi s’yempre medyo marami-rami na rin ’yung naging ‘Enemies-to-Lovers,’ laking pressure ’yon sa akin,” he recalled. “I really wasn’t sure also kung mapu-pull off ko ’yon nang tama, pero I am just doing my preparations talaga. Sobrang nagpapasalamat ako na maraming tao ang naka-appreciate sa role ko.”
To successfully project a fiercer aura on screen, John Clifford turned to fellow actor Anton Vinzon for advice on how to look more “maangas.” Anton’s tip was simple yet transformative: “start the preparation early, even off-camera.”
John Clifford said, “Kahit na wala pa ako sa set, talagang kailangan ko nang mag-start ng preparations kahit sa simple na branding lang [katulad ng] sa pananamit ko, kahit sa mga events na kahit ’di naman connected sa You’re My Favorite Song, pwede ko nang simulan doon.”
For John Clifford, bringing Calix to life meant understanding that even the hardest exteriors hide soft centers. “Behind all those walls, he’s just someone who’s trying to please his family kasi kung ganoon siya ka-hari sa school, sa bahay naman sobrang opposite,” John Clifford explains. “Ako bilang Clifford, I really want to show my family na I want to succeed in life as much as how Calix wants to achieve his dream for his family. Feeling ko ’yun ’yung similarity namin.”

John Clifford’s off-cam camaraderie with co-stars Caprice Cayetano, Heath Jornales, and Marco Masa also deepened the natural chemistry of their characters that viewers felt on screen.
“I feel like ’yun po talaga ’yung isa sa pinakamalaking bagay na nakatulong sa chemistry po namin lahat, kasi I feel like to be able to put on a good show, you need to be comfortable with each other off-cam,” the young Kapuso actor said.
“Para sa akin, I am really so happy and I don’t think I can ask for a better cast to do the show and I am super happy kahit tapos na, talagang mami-miss ko talaga sila. I am really looking forward na sana sa future magkaroon kami ng season 2 ng You’re My Favorite Song,” he shared.
In an industry filled with high expectations, harsh comments, and constant scrutiny, John Clifford views pressure not as a burden, but as fuel for continuous growth. “Lagi kong nire-remind ’yung sarili ko na I feel like it’s also good to feel pressured kasi by the time na hindi ka na nape-pressure parang doon ka na hindi mag-i-improve as an actor.”
The Next-Gen Leading Man
As John Clifford’s star continues to rise, the industry has taken notice, placing him among GMA’s primed “Next-Gen Leading Men.” For the young actor, carrying such a title is both humbling and deeply inspiring.
“Wow! Honestly, parang speechless kasi it’s really my dream to be a leading man one day na hopefully, I can finally lead in a show. That’s really something na dini-dream ko ever since pagpasok ko pa lang dito sa showbiz,” he said.
He also promised that the title attached to his name will serve as fuel to pour his absolute best into every future project. “Super happy ako. To be called that, it’s really such an honor. It really motivates me to do better sa future roles na gagampanan ko and I’m super grateful sa lahat ng suporta niyo. This won’t be the last of my improvements. I’ll really make sure na sa mga next roles na gagampanan ko, I’m gonna put my 101 percent. Sana patuloy niyo pa rin po akong suportahan para makamit natin ’yung dreams natin na hopefully in the future, maging ‘Next-Gen Kapuso Leading Man.’.
Having tested the waters with a fiercer edge, John Clifford’s creative ambition is hungry for even larger, more imaginative horizons, with a dark fantasy twist leading his wishlist. Among his bucket-list roles, he revealed, is starring in a fantasy-drama where he gets to play a vampire.
“Since nagawa ko na ’yung bad boy na role, the ultimate dream role siguro gusto ko ma-try ’yung parang fantasy na drama. Kasi isa sa mga dream role ko ’yung mga vampire. Gusto ko ma-try maging vampire. Hopefully, one day, kapag gagawa ’yung GMA ng vampire show, mag-audition talaga ako,” John Clifford shared.
Yet, beyond critical acclaim, awards, and complex characters, John Clifford measures true success by his character off-camera and the impact he leaves on those around him: “Of course, bukod sa pagiging magaling na actor, I really want to be known as good person or mabuting tao. I feel like ‘yun ‘yung isa sa mga bagay na sasabihin mo na: ‘Gusto ko rin siya makatrabaho,’ ‘Ang bait niya,’ ‘Comfortable ako kapag kasama ko siya sa set’; so, that's something I want my co-actors to feel everytime na kasama nila ako.”
For John Clifford, growth isn’t a single milestone to hit, it’s a lifelong, continuous philosophy. “Growth is something that is consistent, talagang you’ll never stop doing, you’ll never stop evolving.”
And no matter how high his profile rises or how far his ambitions take him, his heart stays firmly linked to the people who believed in him from the very start. “Sa lahat po ng tao na sumusuporta sa akin ever since nasa Cebu pa lang ako, ever since bata pa ako, and siyempre sa mga tao na sinuportahan ako ever since noong nasa PBB journey ko, I wanna say maraming maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat. If I can thank you all one by one, gagawin ko talaga.”
For John Clifford, every role played and every character conquered is merely a stepping stone on an ever-evolving path: one driven by relentless passion, guided by humility, and forever rooted in the hearts of those who believed in him from the start.
“Bukod sa pagiging magaling na actor, I really want to be known as good person or mabuting tao.”
