Passion and Survival

Kelvin’s rise in showbiz isn’t the usual tale of fame and glamour. It’s a story shaped by humility and a purpose far bigger than ambition or hunger for the spotlight.

In an exclusive interview with GMANetwork.com during a windy afternoon at Lanson Place Mall of Asia, the Kapuso hunk opened up about his beginnings with refreshing honesty. For Kelvin, entering showbiz wasn’t initially about chasing the limelight—it was about survival.

Simula (pa) sa buhay ko kung bakit ako pumasok ng showbiz, siyempre para kumita ng pera,” he said candidly. “Kasi noong time na nagsisimula ako, ang goal ko talaga kung bakit ako pumasok sa showbiz is para magkaroon ng hanapbuhay.”

It wasn’t entirely the possibility of fame that got Kelvin attracted to showbiz. It was family. As a devoted son, he diligently and patiently took one bit role after another in teleseryes as early as 2016 simply to earn enough to help at home.

Unbeknownst to him, showbiz was actually a calling. Long before the bright lights and cameras, Kelvin had already been enchanted by the world of performance. As far as he could remember, he’s always been drawn to the magic of theater, since he was a child.

“I want to be like them na gusto ko mag-perform. Kasi I love the arts,” he said.

What began as a way to make ends meet slowly transformed into something more meaningful. His drive in showbiz then grew into a genuine passion and eventually, a dream worth chasing.

Naiintindihan ko na ang pag-aarte is a form of art din. Kaya parang mas doon lumalim ’yung interest ko at napamahal ako sa pag-aartista. Nagagawa ko ’yung gusto ko and the same time I earn money.”

Leading man

After years of relentless hard work and quiet persistence, Kelvin has reached a turning point in his career. In the latter part of 2020, he officially earned his leading man status as Chef Harvey Napoleon in the GMA series, The Lost Recipe.

It was a defining moment, but not without its own set of challenges. As a fresh face stepping into the spotlight, Kelvin knew he had to strike the right balance between staying true to himself and meeting the expectations of a growing audience.

“Pressured ako nung time na ’yun, as in kabado. “Pero ’yung pressure naman na ’yun, ginamit ko siya as a fuel para mas magkaroon ako ng courage to do better, to be great. Hindi ko rin ma-explain ’yung feeling. Parang laging first time, mas nagkakaroon ako lagi ng panata sa sarili ko na mas gagalingan ko pa.”

Kelvin drew attention for his remarkable ability to fully immerse himself in every role that he would take on. Whether portraying an ambitious chef, a devastated patient, or now a fierce Sang’gre, he has earned praise for bringing each character to life with emotional depth.

But such depth in his craft came with a cost. Kelvin admitted that his ability to connect with his characters was a double-edged sword at times. There were moments when fully embodying a role blurred the lines between fiction and reality. Still despite the challenges, Kelvin holds a deep personal connection to each of his roles. For him, every character is more than just a performance. It was an opportunity for him to learn and grow as a person.
Much like his fierce and justice-driven character Sang’gre Adamus, Kelvin Miranda carries not just inner battles but hopes and convictions of his own.

Inspired by the values his character stands for, Kelvin seems to have found a bigger purpose. Just like Adamus, he too believes in standing up for what’s right. Kelvin revealed that one of the fights closest to his heart was the pursuit of justice.

Walang sino man, walang siya, walang ganito, walang mababa, walang mataas. Kumbaga we are all humans na nakakaramdam ng emosyon at lahat ng bagay na meron tayo it’s just a material and maging thankful and grateful na lang ngayon,” he said in a serious tone.

Resilience

The world of showbiz is demanding as much as it is fulfilling. For Kelvin, the journey has not always been easy. In the past, he has courageously opened up about his struggles with mental health and the toll of dealing with constant criticism. But what keeps him going has always been simple: a deep hunger to grow and a dream he refuses to let go.

Yet even the strongest need a hand to hold. Kelvin openly expressed his gratitude for the people who lifted him during his lowest moments.

Plan and Purpose

Armed with unwavering determination and a strong set of values, Kelvin has steadily carved his space in the industry not just as a promising star, but as an award-winning actor recognized for his craft as well. Kelvin's first major accolade came when he was named Best Actor at the 8th Urduja Film Festival for his moving performance in the indie film The Fate. Not long after, he claimed the same honor once again for his role in the 2019 Netflix film Dead Kids.

The recognition didn’t stop there. In 2021, he was hailed as Philippines’ Fast Emerging Actor of the Millennium at the 4th Asia Pacific Luminare Awards. It was then followed by a win at the 35th PMPC Star Awards for Television, where he took home the Power Tandem Award.

Each trophy brought more than just prestige. It became a symbol of the trust placed in him, by the people who idolized him and the people who bankrolled his projects. Kelvin approaches every recognition as a challenge to grow and keep moving.

Dreams and aspirations

Fueled by passion and an unwavering hunger to grow, Kelvin sets his sights on a brighter future for both his career and personal journey. With an open mind to learn, he continues to evolve and never loses touch with the foundations that shaped him.

Mas natuto ako as a person hindi lang sa trabaho ko. Mas naintindihan ko ’yung personal at saka ’yung industriya na hindi siya kailanman pwedeng mag-combine lang,” he said.

Now more focused than ever, the Kapuso star embraces every opportunity to sharpen his skills and explore the vast landscape of Philippine entertainment.
And why stop there? For someone as driven and dynamic as Kelvin, the dream doesn’t end on local soil. He dares to step beyond borders, eyeing the global stage where he hopes to one day work alongside legendary actors like Jim Carrey, Robert De Niro, and Bryan Cranston. But for now, he knows where he needs to be.

So, I think I’m not ready to go international sa ngayon, pero locally I think mas kaya kong palawakin muna dito,” he said with a smile.

As the interview drew to a close, Kelvin took a moment to reflect on his long evolving journey before leaving a tender message to the younger version of himself.

Mas maging matapang ka pa and huwag ka matakot sa kung ano man ma-experience mo. Kasi lahat ’yan, kakayanin mo and wala kang dapat katakutan kasi kaya mo ’yan and kasama si Lord.”
