But who is the real Michael Sager? And how does he want to write the pages of the book that will chronicle his showbiz journey?

We at GMANetwork.com got the chance to have a sit-down interview with the Kapuso actor one busy Tuesday afternoon in February at a quaint coffee shop called Retro Coffee House tucked somewhere in busy Novaliches, Quezon City.

The coffee place will hit you with instant nostalgia with several old antiques, interesting curios and memorabilia decorating the whole space. But the retro and laid-back feel of the coffee shop seemed to have suddenly shifted the moment Michael Sager, in his faded jeans and black biker jacket, entered through the wooden door. With his infectious smile and a light positive aura, Michael suddenly gave the place a different feel to it.

“Hello po, hello po,” he said, bowing his head and smiling at everyone. After apologizing for the slight delay he caused because he couldn’t find his way to the venue, Michael then placed his stuff on the table, sat down on the makeup chair and signaled his makeup artist to work on him immediately. Michael Sager was ready to get down to business and work on the task at hand.

Life in Canada

Michael Sager’s life in the Philippines is very different from what he left behind in the Land of the Maple Leaf. Before being launched as one of the 17-member youth-oriented group Sparkada in 2022, Michael was just a normal young lad trying to earn his keep working as an ice cream scooper and then later on, as a sales associate, in Canada.

“I think to briefly describe my life in Canada was pretty independent, introverted, and siguro I was still very young. I mean it was my high school years, my Canadian years were really fun for me, I learned many things.” the Kapuso actor recalled. “One of the most important lessons though was working at a young age. I started as an ice cream scooper, eventually as a sales associate at a shoe store. And also, I got to experience to work on Disney sets, Nickelodeon sets, Netflix films as a back-up dancer. And those are some things that I cherished, because I didn’t know na working within that environment, that type of work, ’yung professionalism sa Canada, is something I valued, because going here was a big experience for me.”

Michael was already considering pursuing a degree in Architecture for college, but destiny decided to point him in a different direction. It was a path that would take him thousands of miles away from Canada.

Feeling a wave of nostalgia, Michael recalled that it was his father’s prodding to try an online audition that set the wheels in motion, the very thing that would take him out of his idyllic life and thrust him into the glitzy and fast-paced world of Philippine entertainment.

“It all started when my dad told me na, ‘Toy! Audition ka sa isang audition search online lang naman ’yun.’ And it was during the pandemic, so that was the tricky part. All this happened during the pandemic, so kumbaga safety was the number one priority. So, I was telling my parents na I was supposed to enter Architecture sa school na. At the same time, I was trying to figure out what I was really passionate about. So I was really balancing the two, attending school and finding out what I really wanted to do. And at that time, I had experience going live on an App, but the viewers were here in the Philippines. And the Filipino viewers gave me some sort of comfort and enjoyment na for me I really developed the passion to somewhat entertain.”

Realizing that being an entertainer is part of his DNA, Michael took a bold step and asked his parents to allow him to use his gap year in school to give show business in the Philippines a shot.

“And the decision of going home to the Philippines was me realizing na I enjoyed doing this and I could see myself doing this for the rest of my life. So, I told my parents, I was just honest with them. Sabi ko, ‘Ma, Papa just give me a gap year, isang year lang sa Pilipinas let me try it out. Let’s go for this opportunity and whatever happens, happens. And I just prayed, at the time I prayed to the Lord. Sabi ko, ‘Lord guide me, because I really enjoy it’. I prayed na I get to be on a bigger platform and luckily I was discovered by my manager Cornerstone Entertainment, si Sir Erickson [Raymundo] and then led to Mr. M [Johnny Manahan], which led to Sparkle. Which led [me] here today, so, I’m very grateful and thankful for the journey that it has been and of course the main benefactor is my parents for being so supportive. Kasi without them I wouldn’t be here today and without their support I probably wouldn’t be able to stay here.”

A Warning for the Bunso

In spite of his iron-clad decision to take his talents to the Philippines there were some family members who couldn’t help voicing out their concerns. Someone even cautioned him that he might be taking too big of a risk to fly across the world just to see how far his showbiz dreams would take him.

Michael confessed that the two important women in his life had reservations about his career decision: his mom Joy Sager and his grandmother Dra. Julia Masangkay, whom he affectionately calls Lols.

“Actually, it was my Lola, Lola ko Dra. Julia Masangkay and my Mom [Mrs. Joy Sager].” He continued, “Mama’s boy po kasi ako, so parang very close kami ng Mom ko and the fact na ako ’yung bunso na aalis sa bahay, medyo iffy siya dun, but, she really took it to account that she could see na I was really happy with what I was doing. My Lols, my Lola sabi naman niya: ‘Sure ka ba magsho-showbiz ka? There’s lots of benefits, but there are also negatives when it comes to this industry,” he shared. “Sabi ko, ‘Gusto ko lang po subukan.’ I really like listening to my Lola because she would always give me good advice. My Lola is always supportive, but she is also very honest with me. And I appreciate that kasi kumbaga she wanted to take care of me lang and gabayan niya lang ako. Kasi, it was a big decision back then.”

“Masaya ako na slowly I’m making steps na closer to the goal.”

Joining Sparkada: A test of confidence

Every time Michael Sager would step into the spotlight, he looks as though he’s the quintessential entertainer. He’s always poised and rarely loses confidence, despite the thousands of eyes fixed on him analyzing his every little movement, whether he’s performing on stage, acting in front of the cameras, or being interviewed on national TV.

With his captivating smile and trademark dimples, Michael was born for TV. What everyone didn’t know was he was a bundle of nerves several days before the big Sparkada launch. In fact, Michael came to a point where he was no longer sure if he would push through knowing that he still lacked so many of the things needed to become a legit artista.

How did Michael handle the intense training session that Sparkle GMA Artist Center put him through before the grand launch?

“`Yung training namin was all online. So with the help of Miss Ana Feleo our acting training was mga three to five times a week, so it was intense training.” he noted. “There was also dance, there was singing involved at the same time preparing for our launch. So, we only had I think a couple of months unitl our launch so, we really had to be prepared and grabe ‘yung acting workshop.”

Michael was candid enough to admit that his Achilles’ heel was acting.

“Dun ako nanibago kasi, I never acted in my life. I was part of school play lang but itong acting workshop hindi puwedeng mahiyain, you can’t be shy because sayang ‘yung opportunities. So, that’s when I really learned na ito na, like I have to give my best every time, kasi sayang ’yung ’pag nawala na siya sa’yo. So, that’s when I learned na I have to be braver, I have to take bigger steps. And, I shouldn’t be afraid to make mistakes. And Miss Ana was very generous with us and she really taught us many things considering nga that we were getting launched in a few months. Siguro with that training din, that intense training it helped me grow as an actor, as an artist. Para later on in my first few shows I was able to apply it.”

Initially, Michael thought that being part of Sparkada would be a huge adjustment, especially since he and Roxie Smith were the last additions to the group. With most of his family and all of his friends back in Canada, it looked as if life in the Philippines would be lonely, but Michael soon found a home and a family in his fellow Sparkadas.

“Sparkada at that time buo na sila, so kami, me and Roxie [Smith] were one of the last few people to join. They already had a camaraderie, like ‘yung grupo na ‘yun. So, kumbaga me entering it’s kinda nerve wracking for me, kasi I had no friends in the Philippines. Wala akong masyadong family, so sabi ko, ‘Hala! Kumusta kaya ‘to?’ But, luckily when I first met them in person naku napaka-warm pala ng Sparkada, sila ‘yung naging totoo kong friends at that time. And sila ’yung first people that helped me adjust to the culture here, to adjust to the environment.”

Fruits of Hard Labor

Michael is now reaping the fruits of the “seeds” he planted three years ago. After getting a major role in the afternoon series Shining Inheritance starring Kate Valdez, Kyline Alcantara, and seasoned actress Miss Coney Reyes, his home network then turned the pressure valve a bit more by entrusting him the leading man role in the GMA Public Affairs mini-series My Ilonggo Girl, where he plays Francis Palma, the love interest of Star of the New Gen Jillian Ward. He's also part of Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Collab Edition, where he has been capturing the hearts of viewers as the "Diligent WonderSon ng Marinduque"

What were his thoughts about his showbiz career trajectory?

“To be labeled as a leading man kasi pangarap ko talaga ‘yun growing up. But siguro now, entering my third year in this industry I have yet to still learn. It’s still a long journey for me and ‘yung mga comments, ’yung mga negative stuff na like I’m still learning, I’m not the best at acting yet. It’s fine for me, kumbaga, it’s still all a journey and a learning process that I have to overcome and I’m just grateful and I’m very thankful that the management has entrusted me with these major projects na talagang I can’t complain. ’Cause these are my dreams that are coming to life and I’m so thankful that inaalagaan ako ng Sparkle, ng Cornerstone , of course, GMA. I’m still working on it to be a leading man and it’s something na still up there talaga on my goal. Siguro, masaya ako that slowly I’m making steps closer to the goal.”

While his journey has been promising, it wasn't always a smooth one. This promising talent was also once subjected to toxic bashing and scrutiny on the Internet, when he was tapped to be part of the noontime show Eat Bulaga, which was later on renamed as Tahanang Pinakamasaya

“I feel like it’s also nice to get hurt sometimes, because to feel the pain, to feel the sadness. Minsan, we can translate that into fire, fuel and excitement.”

When the revamped show needed young and new blood, Michael was among the names tapped to take on the hosting duties, along with Paolo Contis, Chariz Solomon, Betong Sumaya, Buboy Villar, Kokoy de Santos and the twins Cassy and Mavy Legaspi together with Yorme Isko Moreno.

For some, taking on such a project given the strenuous circumstances at the time could be described as a herculean task. But instead of caving in to the pressure, Michael considered his time in Tahanang Pinakamasaya as an “unexpected blessing.”

He explained, “That was an unexpected blessing ’yung Tahanang Pinakamasaya or Eat Bulaga. It was nakaka-pressure talaga ’yung opportunity na ’yun, because as Kuya Pao said, we are under the microscope, but I think with the love we had with one another, the family that we built with that show, it was pure genuine [love] and we were doing this for the people, whatever comes our way, the bashers. At a certain point, nakakatulong pa rin ’yung G sa Gedli, ’yung magpasaya lang kami, magpa-lighten ng hapon and for us it’s work. But apart from work, this is also a service that we want to provide for the people and there was no time to be negative.”

Michael added, “Feeling ko we really made the most out of it and I also saw more blessings from it. I’ve met people na talagang were genuine to me. I appreciated that family, but, of course, we also learned na things don’t always last forever and to be grateful for whatever comes our way. I’m just happy and I really cherish ’yung mga memories namin.”

Learning from criticism

Mobirise

Michael Sager on those belittling his profession as a celebrity:

“I believe lahat ng trabaho, kahit ano pa man yan, mahirap talaga! And it’s still work, it is a profession and iba ‘yung pagod na mae-experience mo dito because it’s mentally draining, psychologically draining and physically draining. Kasi nga, you go back-to-back taping and it’ something that we should just respect.”

Getting into show business often leads to a lot of opportunities. It's the reason why thousands of dreamers give it a shot. As they say, the allure of fame is just too hard to resist.

Still, being a public figure comes with a price. And putting yourself out there as a celebrity exposes you to criticism. You’re lucky if you get constructive advice about your performance, but in many cases, celebrities are subjected to a ruthless barrage of bashing that can take a toll on their mental health.

Knowing this kind of environment, Michael told GMANetwork.com that he would allow himself to be vulnerable sometimes since he is only human. But he keeps in mind a reminder: that he could use those very critiques to help him improve and better his craft.

“I’m still human e, so kumbaga my feelings will always get hurt. And I feel like it’s also nice to get hurt sometimes, because to feel the pain, to feel the sadness. Minsan, we can translate that into fire, fuel and excitement. Siguro that’s just my way of dealing with the bashing na there are times na parang I was put in a negative side na medyo discouraged ako or I lost my confidence. It’s okay naman to criticize like the constructive criticism I always take into account, because that’s important.

“We can’t say na we’re doing our best, because there is always room for improvement. So, yes, I always take that into account. But I remember my manager, si Sir Erickson, sabi niya, ‘Michael! ’Pag magbabasa ka, it’s kinda pointless e, kasi kung important talaga yan, darating yan sa’yo from above like people will tell you na harap-harapan. So, sabi niya minsan ’yung iba diyan trolls lang. So dun din nag-shift ’yung perspective ko na parang oo nga 'no like, nagsayang ako ng energy ko, ng galit ko, ng sadness ko on these people that are behind screens.” He emphasized, “What’s the point of spreading negativity, let just spread love. I mean we are all not perfect.”

“Feeling ko we really made the most out of it and I also saw more blessings from it. I’ve met people na talagang genuine to me. I appreciated that family, but, of course we also learned na things don’t always last forever and to be grateful for whatever comes our way.”

Michael’s positive attitude towards criticism can be attributed also to his experience working and sharing the screen with one of the finest actors of her generation Miss Coney Reyes

With a smile on his face, Michael reminisced how Coney Reyes, who played the character Aurea dela Costa in the afternoon soap, helped him flesh out a certain emotionally-charged scene that Michael had a hard time doing.

“Tita Coney is the best!” he said, smiling. “We had a scene together na it was one of my first emotional scenes sa Shining Inheritance. My vulnerable side kasi, when it comes to acting is one of my weakest. So, kumbaga I’m aware of it and it’s something I get pressured every time na actor’s cue, iiyak na ganun nape-pressure ako. But si Tita Coney, grabe siya, ‘yung support niya that she gave to me. She prayed over me ah, something she doesn’t have to do. Tapos she helped me in the scene, hinawakan niya ‘yung kamay ko, tapos nag-characterize, nag-internalize.”

Then, Coney gave some pointers that Michael holds in high regard up to this day.

“She also gave me key points na Michael next time puwede mo gawin ’to, para mas ganito.’ To get that advice, to get that type of love from Tita Coney was something very special, kasi Tita Coney is Tita Coney na. I appreciate it and dinala ko ’yun sa My Ilonggo Girl. One of the things she mentioned was aralin ko raw ang voice modulation, kasi malaking difference ’yan sa acting.”

As our interview wound down with Michael Sager, we posed one last question to this heartthrob who was still looking perfect and fresh with his cream suit and mid-cut leather shoes.

We asked him this: if someone gave him a time machine that would bring him back to the moment he was having a heart-to-heart conversation with his Lola Julia about his plans to give showbiz in the Philippines a try, what would he tell her?

Michael fell silent. After a few seconds, he then spoke with a mischievous smile on his face, “‘Lols, tama ka [laughs]. Lahat ng sinabi mo is true, but I think with your guidance and with the guidance of my family talagang I was protected. Kasi, there’s no room for mistakes in this industry. Isang mali mo lang, malalagay ka sa maling path.

“Although, you can make a mistake and learn from it, it’s true. But at the same time we have to be cautious, I think that’s all she really wanted to tell me. We are living in a house made of glass, everybody can see through our lives public, private.

“Lahat ’yan malalabas ’yan, so sabi lang talaga niya mag-ingat and gamitin mo ’tong platform na ito in a good way. To spread love, to spread positivity at huwag natin gamitin para magsiraan, negativity. And I love that advice Lols and thank you po.’”
