Actor Woo Chang-soo dies at 51

Korean actor Woo Chang-soo passed away on January 16. Korean media outlets confirmed on January 18 that the actor had died at 51 years old, marking the loss of a respected figure in theater and musical circles.
Roughly two weeks before his death, on the 29th of last month, Woo shared a candid update on social media about a small but emotional decision amid his health struggles. “I agonized countless times over shaving my head today, but after getting an earful from my younger sister, I only cut off my ponytail,” he wrote.
He followed this with a message that reflected both self-awareness and resolve: “I really need to take good care of myself. Chang-su, get a grip.” Despite enduring physical hardship, he continued to express hope and determination, making the post his final message to the public.
Woo had first spoken openly about his health concerns in April 2023. At the time, he revealed the seriousness of his condition, saying, “The results of the comprehensive health checkup I spent a lot of money on have come out. I've been referred for detailed examinations at a top university hospital.”
Even as the situation worsened, he maintained an optimistic outlook. Reassuring those around him, he said, “I'll get proper treatment and make a cool comeback. Please stay healthy,” expressing his intention to return to performing. Sadly, that return never came.
Throughout his career, Woo Chang-su was deeply involved in musical theater and stage productions. His credits included the musicals Welcome to My World and Face Off, as well as the play Friends, through which he built strong connections with audiences. Beyond the stage, he also worked as a professor at Seoul Hoseo Arts Practical College, where he was known for his commitment to guiding and supporting aspiring performers.
