Barbie Hsu, 'Meteor Garden' star, passes away at 48

Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, the lead star of Meteor Garden (2001), has passed away at age 48.
On February 3, a statement was sent out to Taiwanese media by Barbie's younger sister, Dee Hsu.
Taiwanese news outlet Star ETtoday, reported the statement, originally in Chinese: “Thanks for all the concern. Over the Chinese New Year period, our entire family travelled to Japan for a holiday and my most beloved, kindest elder sister Barbie caught influenza-related pneumonia and has unfortunately left us.
“I am thankful to be her sister in this life, and grateful that we have taken care of each other and kept each other company all these years. I will always be thankful to her and remember her. Shan (Barbie Hsu's nickname), rest in peace. We love you always. Together we will remember forever.”
The exact date of Barbie's passing was not specified.
Barbie was present for the wedding celebration for Taiwanese television producer Wang Wei-chung's daughter back in January. She was also included in a New Year post made by her South Korean husband Koo Jun-yup or DJ Koo on Dec 31 with the rest of her family.
Barbie's ex-husband, Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei, also changed his profile pictures on social media to plain black, as if to indicate that he is in mourning.
She leaves behind two children - a 10-year-old daughter and an eight-year-old son - her children with Wang, whom she divorced in 2021. Three months after the breakup, she rekindled a friendship with her old flame DJ Koo, whom she dated from 1998 to 2000. They tied the knot in 2022.
Barbie debuted in 1994 as part of the pop duo S.O.S. She had her first leading role in 2001 for Meteor Garden and also appeared in TV shows Mars, Corner with Love, and Summer's Desire. She retired from acting in 2011 after getting married but still occasionally appears in advertisements and variety shows.
