Cesar Montano looks back on how he prepared for his Jose Rizal portrayal

'Jose Rizal' actor Cesar Montano, the movie's writer and National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee, and the movie's researcher and consultant, history Dr. Jose Victor Torres discussed the film that they did more than two decades ago in front of a new generation of audience.
At the screening of the digitally restored and remastered version of Jose Rizal, the three looked back on their experience doing what can only be considered a classic.
As Jose Rizal, Cesar Montano needed to study the Spanish language for seven months, even turning his TV to Spanish-language channels while sleeping.
"I was given seven months to study Spanish. Sa set, kung dadalaw ka, you have to speak to me in Spanish kasi naka-focus na doon, e. Kinuha ko lahat ng librong matitisod ko about Jose Rizal, binasa ko lahat," he recalled.
"At lahat ng pictures niya, pina-print ko at dinikit sa wall ng aking bahay. At 'yung TV ko, laging nakabukas in Spanish channel. Walang pwedeng maglipat kahit natutulog ako."
