Cristine Reyes and Barbie Hsu

Actress Cristine Reyes's tribute to the late Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu made waves online after she also celebrated her 36th birthday in the same post.

On Facebook, Cristine shared a throwback photo with the Taiwanese actress, reminiscing about her visit to the Philippines at the height of Meteor Garden fever in 2003.

"Rest in Peace, Shan Cai, our childhood favorite. Also, happy 36th birthday to me. 2•5•25," Reyes wrote in her now-deleted post.

Cristine's grief and self-celebration had netizens caught off guard. After her unfiltered tribute, many memes surfaced online in response to the flak she received.

"Cristine, the Patron Saint of Deepest Sympathy and Birthday Greetings," one wrote.

After facing a wave of criticism, Cristine took down her controversial post and responded on her Instagram story.

She said, “Maligayang Kaarawan sa akin. Yun na lang. Oks na!? Kailangan palaging perfect. Bawal magkamali nowadays.. May kalupitan na kapalit sa mga bagay kapag nagkamali e, diba?"

"Marahil ako nga talaga ay nagluluksa ngayong kaarawan ko. Good?" she added.

Other celebrities, including Sandara Park, Kim Chiu, and the iconic Meteor Garden cast, also paid tribute to Barbie.

Barbie, known as the leading lady of F4 members Jerry Yan, Vic Chou, Ken Chu, and Vaness Wu, died due to pneumonia due to influenza complications on Sunday, February 2.
